OP have you tried melatonin?

Some swear by it, some say it doesn’t do shite.

“PM” meds are just Benadryl. Even some NyQuil formulas are Benadryl. Plain old school NyQuil has Doxyalamine (sp?).

“Wal-Som” is a Walgreens generic. Some are just doxyalamine 25mg. A dose of old green NyQuil only has 12.5mg. Hangover may be an issue though.

Most week nights I take:

2 Advil pm
2 10mg Melatonin
1 Occasional Benadryl

Prescription meds scare me.

Never ever had a problem sleeping. Within 5 min of going to bed, I'm out.

They scare me too, but Advil pm and melatonin do nothing for me.

I’d love to be like this.

I’ve tried everything and have cut out all caffeine and take no naps.

Try some quality valerian root in capsule form. Key word is "quality." They say drinking it in a tincture or tea form is even more effective but the way it smells through capsule leads me to believe the tea would be horrific.

I've been an insomniac my whole life (or at least since hitting puberty), and I rarely ever sleep well. Whether falling asleep or staying asleep, I suck at it, and winding down from a day is very hard for me to do.

Valerian root has been a pretty effective thing, and for some reason, even with only a few hours sleep, I feel great when I wake up if I take it (or at least until the early afternoon I feel great). With 6 to 8 hours of sleep, I feel like I'm a 20 year old again when I wake up. I dream hard too when I take it.

Supposedly it also helps relax and fall asleep. I cannot attest 100% to its effectiveness on that front, but I do tend to relax more when taking it. I do not take it every night, though; much as I would like to, they say not to take it more than 30 days straight at a time to circumvent dependency on it.

Try it out.

You and me both. My wife is this way; she can fall asleep within minutes. I really, truly, envy people like that- about as much as I envy anything else that someone has.

Lifelong insomniac here.. some of what you mention above works well for me.. specifically Wal-Som, of the Kirkland Sleep Aid sold at Costco.. they both contain Doxylamine Succinate, which is the active ingredient in Unisom sleep tabs, i believe, but not the other Unisons.. most OTCs contain the same active ingredient as Benadryl, which works for me sometimes, but also has a wicked rebound effect.

My SO can do the same and this is with drinking multiple cups of coffee and taking naps. As I type this, I’m listening to him snore. He will struggle tonight to stay up for GoT.

I've never really given it any thought. I guess I feel kind of fortunate. Thankfully, it's never been a problem. I always figured people had too much crap on their minds if they couldn't fall asleep.

I think most of my issues/anxiety are definitely self induced. I’m working on it.

I take trazadone

It’s a miracle drug. No hangover and you don’t build up a tolerance like Xanax and ambien

My doc prescribed me one .25 mg of Xanax every night just to chill me out and help my mind from racing and help me get to sleep. I could ask him to increase it to .50mg but I don’t think I need it.

Once I’m in bed I’m sleeping within 10 min or less.

My problem is, I wake up around 2am or 4am to piss, then I struggle to sleep well until I get get up around 6-7. Come 7 I’m up and there’s no way I’m going back to sleep, if I do I’ll wake up at 9 feeling like shite.

It’s like too much sleep makes me feel like shite.

5-6 hours and I feel great.

I took Lunesta for a couple years after Katrina. Slowly just stopped needing it and it's been 10 or 11 years that I've had normal sleep patterns.

Vivid dreams and would nap during the day on the lunesta occasionally but nothing major and I slept great. I'd get back on it if I needed to. I was fine with it.

I had a Lunesta RX when my son was deployed & it worked. The main problem was that it made me hungry. If I went right to bed that wasn’t an issue. I didn’t have any problem stopping the medication.
