Yeah - been taking Ambien regularly now for a long time. I'm probably addicted.

A Sleep Scientist on the Vicious Cycle of Insomnia and Sleeping Pills

quote:

Sleep medications don’t deliver the same restorative benefits as natural sleep, and even though people who take them often swear by them, the research suggests that the drugs don’t tend to increase sleep quality beyond placebos. Currently, Walker says, the best available treatment method for combating chronic sleeplessness is not pharmacological at all; it’s psychological.

So he is pretty much saying you’re going to need a mood stabilizer or SSRI to correct what wrong with the person psychologically, I would far prefer taking a hypnotic, such as ambien, lunesta, or lunesta before getting on a SSRI like celexa, Prozac, or Zoloft.

From a medical board review that I took a few months ago.

I definitely don't agree with that shite, and i think he leaves his area of expertise there.

But doesn't change the fact that sleeping pills suck and we should seek other solutions. He has much better overall advice in his book and in interviews.

I think he means if you are down to sleep aids v psych drugs as last resort options you may as well go all in for psych drugs because the sleep aids are going to exacerbate your issues.

I'm fortunate in that, if i wear myself out physically and keep my life in some semblance of balance, i can always fall asleep and mostly stay asleep.

Do you have a dark cool bedroom? Fan noise? I have 4 loud fans. The room is dark and very cool. Helps.

Once had a RX for Xanax that I almost never took, and if I did, just split it in two and took half. Stuff left me groggy when first waking up and I didn't like the feeling, so I never filled the scrip again.

My wife has an RX for Ambien and she hardly ever takes them for the same reason. About once every 2-3 weeks I'll take one to help me get a better night's sleep since I usually wake up 2-3 time a night after finally going to sleep. Like now at 2:21 a.m.

Anyone use OTC - ZZZquil?

I have had sleep issues for years, no prescription drugs though.

Melatonin has been a go to, but it does give me wierd dreams.

It’s just diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

I take a prescription muscle relaxer some nights when I really want to get some good sleep, but it wasn't prescribed for sleep.

Sleeping is one thing I've never had a problem with, other than waking up earlier than I'd like to on weekends.

Triazolam has been life changing for me. Knocks you out, but has a very short half-life so you do not feel groggy.

I'm only a couple years older than you and had the same issues.

Cutting out drinking is what finally helped me. I can have a drink or two with dinner on occasion, but anything more and my sleep goes to shite with a quickness.

The smoking pot coffee shop in Houston.

Tried a Hempbomb gummy today. Definitely not placebo....a tad dizzy and very relaxed.

I can definitely see this as a sleep booster and anxiety aid. No THC effects obviously.
