Disney accused of 'whitewashing' its 'troubling past' for omitting 'Song of the South'

quote:

The 1946 film Song of the South will not be offered on the $7-per-month service and the Jim Crow scene in 1941’s Dumbo will be edited out, Boardwalk Times reports and The Hollywood Reporter confirms. That’s because both have been deemed racist — Song of the South for its portrayal of African-Americans working on a plantation and serving their white masters and the Doo-wop singing crows, one of which was actually named Jim Crow, a reference to the racist laws that allowed segregation.

quote:

Perhaps the more surprising reaction, and one that is strong, is from people who want Song of the South released — and the crows left in Dumbo and the Siamese Cats in Lady and The Tramp (which are seen as mocking Asians). “I want that,” wrote one commenter. “As a reminder.” To take it out is a “white wash.”

There are also people who think this move is an effort on Disney’s part to “pretend that racism in their past doesn’t exist” and believe not releasing it is a form of white-washing.

Is this where like 3 people say something and we act like that's representative of the general feeling among people?

Good movie IMO

It’s up there with Bambi and Fox & the Hound.

Unbelievable. I guess they will have to get rid of Micky and Minie cause their black, making Disney a racist company.

:eye roll:

Disney doesn’t like to talk about the movie because it sucks, not because it is racist.

The people bitching it likely haven’t seen it. I have, back in the theater in the 1980s.

The people who should be insulted are the whites depicted as too dumb to live.

It’s available to watch online, and it’s a fun little romp and the first time a black man won a film award. It isn’t racist at all.

I got eviscerated by a purple haired SJW for suggesting a movie she had never seen wasn’t some virulent font of hate and bigotry.

It’s just a retelling of the Tales of Uncle Remus

Entertainment made during certain periods show things that were appropriate for that period. This horror should never be spoken of again /s

This is a perfect example of why people need to stop trying to please everyone. It's literally impossible.

Remaster the movie: Disney is racist.

Don't remaster the movie: Disney is whitewashing.

They’re literally revising history.

The movies were filmed in a time when the actions portrayed were not objectionable. Removing those things makes it seem as though they’ve never been acceptable, and that’s a lie.

If they’re worried about people being offended, put a warning label on the packaging. Most of us can handle decades-old images of overt racism without fainting.
