I've done a bit of traveling in my recent years, and one of my absolute favorite things to do is visit a neighborhood bar when I find one.

I think they're becoming few and far between, but there is something great about low prices, low standards, and chicken wings.

Don't forget what online dating has done to the bars... Girls don't have to frick the local losers anymore so they quit going to the bars. In turn, guys quit going.

My old man claims that back in the 70's the bars were full every night.

Now they are lucky to have a decent crowd Fri/Sat.

I use to be able to crawl home from Whitey’s Pool Hall in Metry... still go back when I’m in town.

What happened there? My parents said that used to be the spot

Before Katrna, I used to live 3 blocks from Micks. Used to go there 4 or 5 times a week Sometimes just stopped by for a few minutes and sometimes spent hours and hours. I used to know a lot of people who hung out there. After Katrina, the crowd changed. A lot of the regulars houses flooded and they moved out the neighborhood. Plus they were closed for a good while while repairs were made. Right after the storm I had to move to San Diego for my job, so I stopped going. I live in Metairie now, and I still stop at Micks every once in awhile, but it's not the same for me.

I've got 4 within walking distance of my house actually. Not all "dive bar" type, but a couple of them may be depending on whose opinion you are asking. Actually did a pub crawl this past weekend with a group of friends before a small concert in the town I live.

Someone who lived in Golden Meadow in the late 40s/early 50s once told me that there were 27 bars in town back then. This is when oil and gas drilling was booming.

That's one bar about every 700 feet.

Now there may be 4 or 5.

They're still very common in bigger cities close to the city center, especially in the northeast.

They are in cities with neighborhoods that were created before the advent of zoning. The northeast just has the highest concentration of those. New Orleans one of the few such cities in the south with a large number of such neighborhoods.

Houston has them. I’ve got 2 breweries, a wine bar, a beach volleyball bar, and a shitty dive bar all walking distance from my house. And Petrol Station.

Houston's best asset is its refusal to embrace modern zoning principles.
