Social media has everyone wanting to screw each other when they are outside of their houses. You used to go out, disengage from life and have a few brews then go home and resume life.

No one does that now. Can you imagine walking into a bar, leaving your phone at home and just hanging out with whoever is there? shite.

The neighborhood bars are alive and well in Cleveland and the burbs. The southern Cuyahoga county cities have a bar a block in the city centers.

I love the whole idea of the neighborhood pub/bar. You know the kind you see in that movie, "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne. I grew up with that culture. The town's elder guys playing dominos' at one table while Clyde et al is cooking up the Wednesday night stew in the kitchen out back. You can't fart now in a public place without the fricking public health bureaucrats demanding you apply for a permit.

Fond memeories.

Bar ownership isn’t what it use to be as well. Music licensing, commercial cable accounts, city and state taxes and licenses all make profit margins much slimmer than 25 yrs ago.

Not just NE, I assume it was everywhere. Great small heavy drinks for the cheap. Hit
the locals before the 1/4, Lakefront, etc and you were ahead of the game.

Philadelphia is loaded with towny bars, lot of places still have them. Starting to see them coming back in the form of brew pubs and taverns as the cost of brewing equipment has come down tremendously in the last 8 years.

Chicago is loaded with them, as is the entire state of Wisconsin. Towns revolve around the local tavern.

There is still Coach's Corner in Metairie. A quintessential neighborhood bar.

They tried to open one next to my place in baton rouge but the neighbors complained. So it went nowhere.

It's one of the things I do love about new Orleans. The neighborhood bars are the best. And the cast of characters in them are eclectic and full of stories.

Philip’s in Carrollton was a great neighborhood bar back in the late 80s and into the 90s.

My parents closed in the garage and turned it into their private bar, complete with jukebox or the occasional live band.

We kids ran and played in the house while the adults had their fun. Everyone was safe and happy.

You can thank the Buffalo Wild Wings of the world for commercializing then shitting on the experience.

Same thing has happened to a lot of neighborhood barbershops. You would get the same haircut each time but it could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour depending on the line and conversation.

This is the real reason.

I'm not going to a bar to pay $4.50 for a shitty domestic when I can buy a 6 pack for $2 more.

Also less people are having kids. You go to a bar to drink and cuss away from kids. No kids, no need to get away from them.

I'm surprised how many people actually bring their kids to patio bars and brew pubs now.

Do you have kids?

If so you know why.

Why are you surprised? No one is smoking these days and most places don’t blare loud music. I’ve seen several breweries where they have designated playgrounds for kids and food trucks catered to families.
