Colonial Pipeline paid the hackers who shut down some of its networks nearly $5 million in ransom, a U.S. official familiar with the matter said Thursday.

Colonial, which operates the country’s largest fuel pipeline, announced it had been hacked Friday, and shut down all four of its major pipelines that serve the Eastern and Southeastern United States as a precaution. Gas prices rose, and some stations ran out of fuel. The Department of Transportation issued an emergency order allowing truckers driving fuel in affected states to work longer hours than federal regulations normally allow.

A third-party consulting company that now handles Colonial’s press inquiries declined to comment on the payment.

quote:

The FBI has historically discouraged, but not prohibited, American ransomware victims from paying hackers, as a payment isn’t guaranteed to work and can encourage criminals to continue attacking others. In a press conference Monday, Anne Neuberger, the White House’s deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, acknowledged that some organizations might find paying the criminals off can be in their best interest.

Cowards

How did they guarantee the hackers weren't pulling a Nigerian prince scheme and would fix the code after payment?

My guess is this outfit is a group the FBI and CIA are using for their own purposes.

Sorry they're busy breaking up a 3 person white supremacy ring in Idaho and arresting selfie takers from the Cap invasion.

They don't have time for national infrastructure threats or to monitor known terrorist threats

They're too busy busting grandma for walking around the Capitol and trying to take down Rudy Giuliani.

Not only that, but they paid them in Bitcoin which makes it that much harder to investigate/trace.

I suspect hackers/scammers/other ne'er do wells across the globe are dancing a little jig today.

Probably have a bunch evidence to doctor up for the next FISA warrant.

Or maybe even working on a carefully planned leak to Yahoo News again.

A lot, maybe half, of ransomware victims pay the ransom.

Cyber crime pays.

The issue here is offline backups of critical systems. The power industry is heavily regulated (NERC/NRC) to insure they are protected from these attacks. Not sure who regulates pipelines though if at all.

And making it far more lucrative for hackers now knowing these companies will pay up.
