They’ve been paying up. Many don’t have a choice. It’s cheaper to pay the ransom than rebuild and reconfigure IT infrastructure.

What leads you to think that?

Im not saying they should have, but that's like me pulling a $5 bill out of my wallet

According to this morning’s WSJ article after the ransom was paid, the tool used to unlock the hack didn’t work. So the random was paid for nothing.

They can't immediately do anything. The FBI doesn't have some undo tool/backups, all they can do is eventually track its origin. A few local police depts were hacked, the FBI told them to just pay for the time being.

Most big companies are insured for being hacked. Whoever insured them paid it.

Didn't they do this last week? I read that the encryption the hackers gave them was taking too long so they had to move forward with restoring their backups anyway.

Just a total waste of $5M.

FBI is too busy looking for fake vaccine cards. They ain’t got time for ransomware attacks.

Ah, bullshite. I was told this is a Russian group. The Chinese are our friends. The government is simply protecting our rights and staying out of our individual lives. Where have you been, man. This is America.

And making it far more lucrative for hackers now knowing these companies will pay up.

Which is why I didn't comment on the merits of the payment, only that is not a material amount of money

Not only that, but they paid them in Bitcoin which makes it that much harder to investigate/trace.

Isn't bitcoin completely traceable? Now they know the wallet ID of the hackers and can monitor the wallet and monitor any transactions to and from that wallet and any connected wallets.

The NHS will offer some support but not much. The FBI isn’t there to fix anything. They’re just there to find the people who did it.

How did they guarantee the hackers weren't pulling a Nigerian prince scheme and would fix the code after payment?

You're right dude! I bet they didn't even think about that!
