I don't know dik about cars

Needed a blower motor resistor (from online research) due to the heat/ac not blowing. Mechanic wants to hit me up for $370: $150 for the part, $220 for the labor.

1 week later, I ordered the part on Amazon for $14 (auto store charged $41). Part delivered in 2 days. 2 days later, I watched a 10 min YouTube video on how to replace it.

Switched the part in all of 5 minutes. Air works fine.

I do that often. I use rockauto for my stuff mostly. I'll watch a YouTube video and if its something I think i can do I'll get after it.

With that said, I dont change my own oil. Cost me $40 and I'm out of there in under 20 minutes. I would only save $8-10 doing it myself and it would take longer than 20 minutes and I have to get rid of the oil after.

It's usually less expensive if you start changing out parts than going to a mechanic.

Some are. Most are just working guys trying to make a living and provide a service that you don’t want to do and will pay for. But when you find a good honest mechanic they are worth their weight in gold.

What is your profession and how are you compensated for what you do?

Could your customers do it themselves for cheaper?

I did the same for an AC part that the local shop was going to switch for 1,500 dollars.
Part was $32 and took me a little over an hour. Thank you Youtube

They, like all businesses, have tons of overhead and taxes to pay.

You, at your house, have nothing like that.

Keep doing this kind of work. It is kind of rewarding. But don’t be mad at others for making a living.

Too bad there's not a world-wide knowledgebase you could use to keep from getting ripped off.

ETA just read the rest of your post yes YouTube is an auto mechanics worst nightmare.

Here’s the deal from the mechanics end.
He has tools to pay for, rent, insurance, subscriptions for software, and supplies. He has to make a living like anyone else, and we probably charging what the labor called for in the book.

Some mechanic shops don’t share your values or aren’t as savvy online. Had a similar situation myself where i purchased a $30 part online where they were going to charge me $300 plus labor. But they would’ve had it fixed that day. I explained it and they understood. I still go there for other things.

Few of them look as if they are living the good life as a result of their charges. You waste money on far more ridiculous, worthless jobs like realtors regularly.

YouTube has taught me how simple many peoples jobs are. Some of these industries know this and limit availability of parts to only mechanics like HVAC.

Even people who have no idea about cars can do some research online, watching YouTube video and save a bunch of money doing it themselves. This isn't for everything but a lot of things.

I have a mechanic and he is 1/3 of what the dealerships charge. Good work and usually same day.
