My son and I, hes 14, changed my wifes brakes pads last Sunday. It's very easy to do.

well you do realize they are in business to make money, right? As long as they aren't lying to the customer I don't see the problem. You don't have to agree to the repairs. The service provider can make all the offers they want, but you're under no obligation to purchase them.
I fail to see why they are "freaking scum" for offering to fix things in need of repair- unless they are making shite up.

A large percentage of mechanics are liars as well.

Some mechanics will let you buy the part yourself and bring it to them and they just charge labor. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

bait-and-switch

noun: bait-and-switch
the action (generally illegal) of advertising goods that are an apparent bargain, with the intention of substituting inferior or more expensive goods.
"a bait-and-switch scheme"

I have a buddy who recently opened his own shop but, prior to that, was working for another mechanic and would do shade tree work on weekends. I used him to do some repairs on my cars several times.
The thing that shocked me was how Napa has accounts for mechanics and any part purchased under that account is discounted 50%. So a mechanic charges you $300 for a pump they're only paying $150 for...then you add in the ridiculous hourly rates for labor.
Mechanics can make a killing.

I fail to see how finding and repairing problems on a car that's still under warranty fricks the customer.

explain to me how this is bait-and-switch?
you go get an oil change or brake job. they tell you you need to change your transmission oil, belt, cabin air filter, etc.
You say "no". If they do it w/o your approval, you refuse to pay for it.
by your own definition,

nothing illicit has been done up to this point.
Offering you the service isn't bait and switch.

I will do a few things at my house. The starter went out in my wife's 2011 Sienna van and a shop wanted $700 for the part and the labor to replace it. Purchased a new one for $150 and watched a Youtube video and within a few hours had it replaced and running good.

F-150 check engine light was intermittently on/off last week. Took it in yesterday for a scan. Had to replace ignition coil assembly and spark plug on 1 cylinder. $333.14 got me out the door which I could swallow.
They charged me $12.80 for the spark plug.

are you a communist? Do you make a profit? Does your employer?
And you haven't even figured in what his overhead cost is or the other shite he may be paying- like his own health insurance! or his house note, kids tuition, etc.

Maybe instead of offering something "free" to get your car in so 100% of the time they can find several other issues they should offer a 20 point inspection.
It's crooked but you go ahead and get your free brakes and a $800.00 bill for fixing a bunch of stuff that actually doesn't have to be fixed. Baw

That is my biggest issue with them, and why I do most maintenance and repairs myself. My late wife once took my car in for an oil change and the guy comes in to the waiting room and says "maam I have a lot of bad news." He then proceeds to go through a laundry list of problems. The motor mounts needed to be replaced. We needed 2 new o2 sensors, the blend door actuators were not working right, we needed new brake pads and rotors, and the master cylinder on the break system was bad. My wife called me hysterical because the car needed over $3000 in work. Not one thing was true.

While the the price the OP gave was high, the above is true for many trades. No matter level of the job, the person is still on the clock and needs to make enough each day to be able to justify having that job.
If you are a helpless soyboi and can't change the A/C filter in your home, then don't expect the trained professional to come out and do it for 5 dollars. Even though just $5 seems like a lot for the 30sec it takes to swap a filter, that person still needs to make xdollars that day to be able to continue coming to work.

I charge $150 for labor but I imagine mechanics labor rate changes due to the type of work they have in front of them? I’m not sure if they do set rates or not. If I have say a school bus or 18 wheeler than I do double my labor since I have to get a helper. I’m on the higher end in my area though, most of my competition charge around $100 in labor.
Eta: That’s for windshield replacement. Crack repairs are just a set price and much cheaper. I actually prefer repairs, make less money but in all honesty, it can be a bigger challenge, not back breaking wise, there is just an art to it.

So as a mechanic, you can sleep well at night knowing that you ripped off a customer by gouging the ever living frick of him/her to pay for your expenses?
That has nothing to do with capitalism vs communism. That has everything to do with your character, period.

But when you find a good honest mechanic they are worth their weight in gold.
Love my current mechanic. Old guy that once had a large shop employing 15 people, now works by himself only 3 days a week. Charges 60/hr + markup on parts. Has an air conditioned shop. Picks the days he wants to work and goes on vacation whenever he wants. Not a bad way to stay active even when retired.

but you assume the repairs offered are unnecessary. If indeed they are, I agree its an illicit scheme. But offering to fix something isn't a crime. And its definitely not wrong if the repairs are justified.
And you, like so many here, seem to think that you have no role in this. As if you can't question why the repair is needed. That you're getting "fricked" cause YOU AGREED to the repair.
That's on you.
