Car insurance is a racket

My truck windshield was cracked last October while driving to Houston. I've been more or less ignoring it because it's not in my line of sight while driving, so no big deal. I recently re-upped with Allstate and got my comprehensive deductible down from $500 to $100. I'm going get my truck serviced tomorrow, so I went ahead and last Monday filed a claim for a new windshield. $100 bucks, why not.
I get a call from them an hour ago confirming my appointment tomorrow morning and they're reviewing my claim with me and tell me I'll owe $500 for the windshield. I told them they were incorrect and that my deductible was currently $100 as I renewed my policy and lowered it. They told me that since I told them that the damage happened last October (when my comprehensive was $500) that's what I would owe to replace the windshield. Asked to speak with a supervisor (her name was Karen), let her have it for a bit and asked "if I would have said this happened last week, I would only owe $100, correct?" "Yes sir, that's correct." "So since I was honest about when it happened, I have to pay an extra $400?" "Unfortunately yes sir, that's the case."
TL;DR - Lie. Lie your arse off.

A windshield cost like 300 bucks dude. Just pay for it yourself

I just tell them I got a broke windshield and need it fixed.

Drop them and go with someone else.

Why would you file a claim for a new windshield?
Posted on 8/15/19 at 5:54 pm to AverageJoe26
Uh, yeah. If you give insurance of any kind reason to believe that you've been delaying repair or use, they are going to frick you as hard as they reasonably can.

It might be a racket, but not for the reason you listed.

WTF dude, that's how life works. It is just like someone can't wreck a car then get collision/comprehensive added the next day to cover the damage.

You're mad that they want you to pay the correct deductible? And recommend everyone else commit insurance fraud?
Do you also bitch about the high cost of insurance?

Why on earth would you want a $100 deductible? Is that all you can afford? You're far better off, mathematically, with as high a deductible as you can afford.

Let me get this straight.
You told them the damage was done when your deductible was $500.
And you expect them to just say, oh okay. Your so nice and honest, since you didnt claim this until you lowered your deductible, we're gonna take the hit?

What you are trying to do is insurance fraud.

Well you reported the claim with a date during the time when your deductible was $500.
Also, don’t you think it’s a little dishonest to lower your deductible then file your claim?

Hence the racket

racket??? try getting car insurance in late 80's, early 90's, when there wasn't competition. Market was limited.
at 16, you were paying 1,600 for full coverage on anything. And much more if you had a new ride.
Once competition was allowed, shite hit a reasonable rate.
