yes they are very weak and flimsy. owner usually doesnt have any real control of the animal, and they are dangerous in themselves.

Those of us in the animal industry call it by a number of names
Satans yarn
Finger taker (not joking)
Piece of shite
etc

to OP, sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she recovers quickly from her injuries.

I visited family in north of Shreveport over the weekend. Just before dark I went out for a run. A neighbor behind him had a Pit in the front yard and it ran out toward me barking. The owner ran out his front door yelling. The dog came out onto the road. He screamed as loudly as he could at it and it ran back to him. I always carry pepper spray and had it ready. Glad I didn't get the chance to use it. By then it was getting difficult to see the road. About a half mile further away, a deer ran across in front of me, then another quarter mile away I nearly tripped over myself when I nearly stepped onto a dark snake slithering across the road and mid-stride. No idea what it was, but I decided that I won't run in the country at dusk any longer

I have gameplanned for either gun or knife if one comes at me or my wife while we're out walking.

I've heard they do, but I think the real issue is being able to control your animal on a short leash if something sets them off.

If your dog decides to go after something, and you don't clamp down on the leash quick enough, the dog can be many feet away from you with really no way for you to pull them back with the leash.

I have personally been there when a sweet family pet, a 13 years old pit bull, that had never been anything but sweet and playful, suddenly woke up from a nap and lunged at the neck and face of the 14 years old son of friends that have been around the dog for it's entire life. It took 23 stitches to repair the tears and punctures in his face. It happens suddenly with no provocation by the teenager or his mother, who was sitting on the same sofa with her son. It just snapped. These dogs are ticking time bombs.

Its a married white middle class couple who lives in a neighborhood and evidently where there are no laws on owning pit bulls.

I just had to look it up to get details, but I live in Plaquemine and this is what is required to own a pit bull.

1. A special permit. If you don't have a permit its illegal to own one.

2. The dog has to be secure at all times. The dog has to be properly confined, there can't be areas in the yard where the dog can easily escape and there can't be anywhere in the yard where someone can have unauthorized access. For example, if a kid can open your fence or can easily get in your yard without anyone knowing then you can't get a permit.

Sort of like having a pool. Its dangerous for a kid to enter unattended, its not something that happens all that much, but it can happen.

3. This is where the city protects itself. If the city thinks your setup or dog is risky they can deny permits. Then they make it clear that its less about the breed and more about liability and safety on paper.

I am sure this one has pissed a few people off. This applies to American pit bull terriers, staffordshire.. I guess that's a type of pitbull OR anything that looks like a pit bull. I didn't know the city law on this was that specfic. It can be a quarter of a pit bull, but if it looks like one a permit is needed and you are held liable if it causes any damage to someone.

I know there are people who defend pit bulls and I have been around some that were really good. For thanksgiving, we went to someone's house who had a pit bull. I went pet the dog as soon as I got there and that dog followed me everywhere. I was watching football after lunch and that damn dog laid there by me the whole time.. The problem is how strong they are. They can be the sweetest dogs, but all it takes is that one moment and its not like a chihuahua where someone can punt it across the room if it goes after them. Their jaw muscles are so strong and once they get ahold of something they use their hole body to try to rip it to shreds.

I don’t know about banned, but my dog is only 42 lbs and ran towards a squirrel then it snapped. She sat down immediately and waited for a command, but I won’t use one of those again.

A retractable leash is bad choice for large and/or strong aggressive dogs on walks when others will be present. People usually already have leash extended too long when situation goes bad and/or not locked to allow slack to be taken up. These kinds of dogs for neighborhood walks need to be limited to a leash of 5ft or 6ft of length with loop handle you can put hand thru the loop and hold on to the leash just below or at where the loop is formed with leash which also tightens loop around your wrist instead of the coffee cup like handle on most retractable leashes. A built in 2nd handle at least midway to the dog to improve grip of your second hand to control dog and keep closer when needed would also be a good thing.

They offer no real control and are only used by people who have zero control of their dogs. About a year ago I saw a dog that was being walked on the other side of the street lunge away from it's owner to try to get to my dogs and it was run over by a car. The owner then lashed out and berated the poor girl driving the car.

Also I was bitten by a dog whose retractable leash broke.

Uh, no. They were intentionally bred to be fighting dogs. This isn’t some unfortunate flaw in their DNA.

Small women with large dogs they can’t control is probably the bigger concern. Woman in my neighborhood with 2 large labs was getting pulled all over the place when I was teaching my kids to ride a bike a few years ago. Eventually, the dogs dragged her to the ground and 1 got loose. Thankfully they were labs and not a pit bull.
