At this point, I'm torn between who I detest more. The breed or the owners. Both are a cancer on society.

Over the summer a girl I know was attacked by her neighbor's two pit bulls. Their owners were your average middle class family.. who thought their two dogs wouldn't hurt a fly. She says her neighbors assured everyone that was the case.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Any human taking a pibble in public needs to be flogged. A pibble can't help but to be what it is. Breeders and owners though... are definitely to blame.

Lot of good that will do with a determined pit bull... "Pitbulls are exceptionally strong for their size, capable of pulling over 2,000 pounds".

Harness or not, that dog is gonna do what it damn well pleases.

My 80lb Golden can pull my arse around even with a harness if she wants to... difference is she's probably rushing toward a squirrel or a friendly human for pets.

That's always the first thing my baws at work ask. And they whisper it.

People don't understand instinct. It's been bred into them to fight and kill. Even a little terrier wants to do it, it just can't. People think it's cute when they're snapping and violently tossing their head back and forth, but it wants to snap the neck of something (like a rat.)

Pit bulls want to kill. It's in their nature.

If you need a harness to keep a dog from attacking a grandma then the dog is also part of the problem, no matter how worthless the owner is.

My mother is traumatized and in a lot of pain. She is in the early stages of losing cognitive functions and this terrified her. Thanks for the concern.

It’s difficult. Every son on here understands the emotions. You wanna get revenge times ten. But, I wasn’t there. Didn’t see what happened. That’s why I hoped someone on TD had better information.

I visited family in north of Shreveport over the weekend. Just before dark I went out for a run. A neighbor behind him had a Pit in the front yard and it ran out toward me barking. The owner ran out his front door yelling. The dog came out onto the road. He screamed as loudly as he could at it and it ran back to him. I always carry pepper spray and had it ready. Glad I didn't get the chance to use it. By then it was getting difficult to see the road. About a half mile further away, a deer ran across in front of me, then another quarter mile away I nearly tripped over myself when I nearly stepped onto a dark snake slithering across the road and mid-stride. No idea what it was, but I decided that I won't run in the country at dusk any longer

I double leash my dogs. They are strong and should a collar or leash snap, back up is on. Especially if using a halter, double leash. Martingale collars for the win.

OP, I hope your mom is ok and that woman.

There's a reason for this (and it's not "bad owners"...it's genetics):

quote:

many homeowners insurance policies do not cover pit bulls (including American Pit Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Terriers) due to their classification as high-risk or aggressive breeds. Insurers may deny coverage, exclude pet liability, or charge higher premiums, though some companies use breed-neutral policies based on individual dog behavior rather than breed.
