If you can have the perp lie and say he didn’t see the guy he hit, you can get reasonable doubt when it’s unreasonable.

Yeah, I mean I am assuming this is what happened.
He had been drinking, he hit the dude and left. Called his parents, informed them of what happened, they got the lawyer involved, the lawyer informed him to say he didn't even know he hit someone.
That will be part of his defense. Since there is nothing to prove he was drinking and that, according to him, he didn't even know he hit someone, which will probably be used to convince the jury he didn't even see anyone.
