However, I don't think chasing down someone who stole your bike, shooting them in the head and leaving them on the street to die is a proportionate response.

Can’t argue with its effectiveness though.

Is this what NBR has become? Seems like something one would say if living in South Central Los Angeles, not Baton Rouge...

NBR has been a shithole for decades. It's as bad as rough areas of New Orleans, Birmingham, Baltimore etc.

Guy was a thief but pretty extreme to chase him down from a convenience store to shoot him in the head. I don’t think someone should be using lethal force if them or their family isn’t presented with an imminent threat of danger or violence.

I was told in my CC class that if someone breaks in but then flees your property you could get in trouble shooting them while they’re running away.

Maybe don't steal from others is the simplest way to prevent this.

it doesn't sound like poverty that fricked the dude up, more so mental illness. People shouldn't die over a bike but the guy shouldn't steal peoples shite either. frick whitey I guess.

In addition to the questionable angle of the story, this is also a poorly-written article. That lead paragraph... geez... learn to write!

So what exactly IS a proportionate response to having one’s bike stolen? Let him have it? That’s not proportionate. He has the bike and you don’t. Chase him down and beat him? You might get stabbed or beaten yourself. Shooting him may be considered second degree murder, but if I’m on that jury, I’m not convicting him. frick that guy for stealing that man’s bike.

Maybe he should have stuck to being a talented pianist.

what charges is the bike owner facing? you can't use deadly force to defend property in Louisiana.

frick the dude who stole the bike.

If more thieves got shot, there'd be a lot less thieving.

Police said that in the moments leading up to the shooting, Kaufman took a bike from outside the convenience store and started to ride off. Santiago exited the store and started chasing him, then pulled a gun and shot Kaufman in the head. Santiago stood over the gunshot victim before walking away and "leaving him for dead on the side of the street," according to the arrest report.

As a property owner in EBR I am glad one less thief is off the street and others may be deterred from stealing.

Guillwane Kaufman, 36, was hoping for a new start. He planned to move to Wisconsin and live with his mom because he worried what would happen if he stayed in Baton Rouge.
Clearly, he was not trying for a new start.

He was continuing to steal.

I agree. Little stiff on the penalty for a stolen bike. I get if he is threatening then by all means kill him. But I mean it's a bike. Shoot near him and tell him to stop, if he doesn't, clip his leg. He will stop then.

Anyone with property knows it took money to have it. And to have money you use your time to earn it. And time is actually Life.

So, if someone steals your property they stole a part of your life that you cannot get back.

Stealing is very similar to murder to me.
