Have to agree. Have a chocolate and would not get another.

Best dog we have ever had was a Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog). Great, loving, loyal, sweet and gently. Could not ask for a better dog.

Lab all day but I will say meet the dam and sire first before picking one out of the litter.

I had a dachshund growing up and he was awesome. Super loyal, playful and great watchdog. Dude would hear anything that was unusual and let us know. Only downside was he barked a lot.

Now I have a shih tzu and my whole family loves her. She was super easy to train and loves to play with everyone that comes over, including other pets. Great lap dog. There's some maintenance with grooming but it's not bad.

if young kids are in the equation and you want a mid to mid-large dog (GR size) my suggestions: General common trait for these breeds is higher intelligence and trainable.

1. Golden Retriever: Classic dog, friendly to everyone and big goof balls. good around kids. big negative for some folks is the amount of hair and shedding

2. Standard poodle: very smart and inquisitive animals. make good family pets and are active so kids can get a lot of play with them. Their attitudes can be a little stand offish at times but not frequently. Big bonus is that shedding is almost zero with their coat.

3. Doberman: great family dog. Will protect their family and treat the kids like their own. Loveable goofs despite their reputation. That being said of the dogs mentioned they will be the most territorial and guard their home the most so work with them to accept strangers. Biggest drawback, they are extremely active and need outlets for energy so be prepared for walks and play time.

I have a Jack Russel /Beagle mix. She’s about 15 years old and still has tons of energy. A former coworker gave her to me when she was just a puppy. He found her abandoned by some railroad tracks. Hands down the sweetest dog I’ve ever owned. She’s not worth a damn as a guard dog though. She doesn’t bark at anything.

We just put a deposit down on a yellow. Very excited. What has been your experience with yellows compared to black/brown?

Completely depends on the exact type. English vs American.

For the most part though yellows will always have a calmer demeanor than the other two.

Black Mouth Cur

Smart as hell. Reads your mind. Protective of the family but cues off of the owner. This is the "Ole Yeller" dog of the book. They'll die for you if need be. Or herd your cows or bay hogs or tree squirrels. Don't eat much. Best dog I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of them. You just have to remember this dog is very sensitive to your approval. You hurt his feelings and he'll resent it. Generally happens when you treat them like a dog and not a black mouth cur. You don't have to yell at them. He knows what you're thinking.

We fostered a Jack Russell. It was the coolest, most bad arse little dog I’ve ever seen. I really regret to adopting him.

Depends on your situation. That cannot be stressed enough. My dog is the sweetest, most loving dog in the world when she’s tired. But it takes hours and hours and hours to get her tired. And if she’s not tired, she has huge drive instincts that are not easy. So, if you lived on a farm, I’d tell you one dog and if you lived in an apartment, I’d tell you another dog

Whatever you get, just spend a lot of time with it and make it a part of the family.

My daughter has been a Veterinary Technician for years. Golden Doodles have plenty of medical issues. Out of those you mentioned I would pick a female Golden Retriever. I love the Labs I have had but the one Golden Retriever was the best dog I’ve ever had. Well my German Shepherd may have something to say about that. ??

Does anyone have experience with miniature pinschers?

A local shelter posted one for adoption yesterday that caught my attention, and she's only about a year old, but I only know as much about them as Google searches tell me. I've only dealt with dachshunds in my family.
