I asked ChatGPT about the origin of the two minute “warning”:
The “two-minute warning” got its name because, originally, it really was a warning to the teams that roughly two minutes remained in the half.
In the NFL’s early decades, the official game clock was kept by an on-field official, while stadium clocks weren’t necessarily considered authoritative. So the referee would stop play near the two-minute mark and notify both teams how much time officially remained. That became known naturally as the two-minute warning.
As stadium timing became standardized and everyone could clearly see the official clock, the warning was no longer necessary as an actual time notification. But the NFL kept the stoppage, and it evolved into an important strategic break—and, eventually, a convenient television commercial break.

One that always bothered me was in The Replacements, they call a timeout immediately after a kick return in order to stop the clock.

The wife and I went for three days to take a break from kids and our fast-paced lifestyle.
It was really nice. We stayed in Smithville, though, which is 20 minutes or so from Hochatown. It's a cool place to just get away from society for a bit.
