The Library does offer some kick arse services online that I assume are not free for the library to offer. With a library card you have access to tons of current ebooks, streaming music, movies, games, curent newspapers, archived newspapers, and tons more. Yes "muh tax dollas" pay for all that. So take advantage of it. Read some "Gahdan Wood" or "Vickas" and learn something.

More than half of ebrs population will prob be in a library a few times at school. Once they hit teen years, never will step foot in one again.

No need for 14 fricking libraries.

I'm not advocating shutting down the library system. I just think that we have too many branches. Some of them are just a few miles apart.

It appears as though 35 are standalone neighborhood libraries, 3 special libraries (African American Library, Genealogical Research Library, Metro Research Center), 4 express locations, and 2 partnership libraries.

The Baton Rouge system offers a lot more than the Houston system does. The system is one of few 5 star rated libraries in the nation. Houston's library system is not star rated at all.

No. But we already do so we might as well enjoy it.

It might be because Houston suburb and surrounding city schools like Katy and Cypress are so good and have a great library system already in place at the school.

You need a pen and a paper to fill pit a job application.

A lot of places these days do online applications.

Need a computer with internet access for that.

Fire protection would not be a city service, if you know anything about SG you'd know we have fire districts now for protection. It works well, even BR uses it for coverage.

So once you form your own city, you still want the rest of the parish to help pay for your fire service?

How's that not a waste of our taxes?

I applied for jobs about 6 years ago, and even then nearly all of the applications were online. I’m sure now it’s even closer to 100%.

Eh, in fairness the fire protection districts are already established and paid for. They have some different boundaries than the municipal, and even Parish, boundaries.

St. George Fire District already exists, already is paid for via property taxes, and will continue to provide fire service for St. George and also plenty of areas that aren't in BR but also aren't in the proposed St. George.

Nothing will change, and no one outside of their fire district will pay for it.

You have to be trolling. People like yourself discussed this first go round. SGeans have independent fire protection districts funded by property taxes from property owners.

No BR tax dollars go to our fire protection.

Good thing there's an app for that. They can use their smart phone.

How does this work from an insurance perspective? I know its off topic, but does having a fire district create a higher premium than municipal fire?

and to bring it back to topic, is there a chance St. George will go to a municipal fire department in the long run?

Civil service??? Can't answer that one, but I'm guessing it's a parish wide thing but I could be wrong.

Civil service not necessary since they are outsourcing services

For a post that claims to be “all about facts” they posted very few. Read the advocate article Here. It’s a good look at the financial gymnastics that are going on.

Wait you consider The Advocate a reliable source
They annexed themselves into the city as a little island on Reiger Rd. We know where their bias is, and it's far from objective.

Let’s set the facts straight real quick. The Parish Library System receives too much money from the citizens of the parish. You shouldn’t renew any library taxes for the next 10-20 years. They waste money and have no problems doing it.

BREC also receives too much money and is considering $100 million move of a zoo that no one goes to. I see parks all throughout the Parish that are never used and are in shite condition. We didn’t have to build a splash pad at independence park. BREC wastes a ton of money too. No new taxes should be renewed for them. Also, any tax that goes to Visit Baton Rouge should be removed. They are a corrupt organization that does really offer any benefit to the City/Parish.

We could lower our property taxes by not renewing this crap and save some money and get just as good of services.
