Look at BREC. They are similar to the Library System in that they are run by a board and they have their own revenue stream.

The library is almost 100% tax funded, except for the little amount they get in fines.

BREC collects money from citizens for the use of golf courses, sports leagues, classes, and even some parks.

The library doesn’t charge (to my knowledge) for use of materials, internet, classes, or meeting rooms.

I'm sure the EBRP budget is full of waste, but what this really demonstrates how unrealistic the proposed St. George budget is.

BREC has a property tax supporting it of over 14 mills which is more than the library tax. They are doing very well.

Did you read their budget?
What is unrealistic?
Did you see the comparable budgets from similar sized cities?

Libraries are more than books. They are a community center. For many people of lower income they are the only source of internet access, which is a necessity of modern life in America.

They also require grounds maintenance, utility costs, staffs, equipment and have decades of pension obligations. I didn't see any line item in the St. George budget for pensions and legacy costs. I wonder why that is.

How much do other cities pay per library per month?

I just looked up the Houston Public Library system budget on houstontx.gov and it's yearly total expenditures are $40,002,998 for 44 branches.

I provided a link to their proposed budget. It's too long to cut and paste.

I suggest everyone here read it. It would clear some things up.

Well put it to you like this, the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government budget is in excess of $200 million. Thibodaux, a city of 14,000 and much smaller in area than the one proposed has a budget of 39 million.

So yeah, I think the St. George budget is unrealistic.

We could save some money and get Houston to send over a bookmobile.

The truth is the Libraries and BREC fly under the radar. We all want libraries and parks so we pass their taxes.

Does anyone ever look to see if they are efficient? No, they have good experiences and don't care to check.
Meanwhile they keep on growing.

It wouldn't hurt for people to compare what we spend with what others spend.

Yep. Poor folk can't afford their internets for their brand new iPhone x.

You do know that we subsidize internet for the poor right? If you're on govt assistance you only have to pay like $10 a month for internet thanks to the govt.

Shame shame shame

Where's the safety net?
What happens if a dude left his charger at home and his battery went dead? What happens if a dude has his phone stolen and can't get a new one until the next day? And the rain. Yea a dude's phone could get wet and go to crap.

But there library will always be there just in case.

With a library card you have access to tons of current ebooks, streaming music, movies, games, curent newspapers, archived newspapers, and tons more.

It's 2018... Everyone has access to this on the little electronic device in their pocket.

BR if full of bloat and wasted money; a pretty good public library system is not the one to make this point.

The report you linked claims only 33 million in expenditures in year 1 which is grossly below other cities of comparable population. Even those listed on the report.

They’re also factoring in $0 for police/fire/civil service.

Is there an updated budget?

The city of Thibodaux had its own fire dept., its own parks and recreation dept., its own sewer treatment plant, its own water plant, its own OEP, police, etc.

SG won't have any of that. We get parish services.

ETA When you compare city budgets you have to look at what services a city provides. Not all cities provide the same services.

For example Zachary has its own gas dept. BRougeans get gas from private utilities.

You do know that in order to access the internet you need a device, which people receiving government assistance may not be able to afford.
