WIll they go over budget? No doubt. That said, at least they have an evidence-based plan they can present to the people, not just a bunch of opinionated barbs like Gravy and his brethren

Point is, I might not believe their estimates — most ventures like this go over budget, and that’s to be expected — but at least they have a model all in place to combat the mayor's exaggerated claims of how much it will cost and how much taxes will increase, etc.

Uh-uh. I saw the governor on TV last night and he said it’s the state Republicans that are the problem.

They don’t want to agree with him.

Everybody has a model in place. Every time a tax comes up, there's a model in place.

SG citizens will still be paying for this library system. You truly believe that money will just get handed to SG officials?

And why are they attacking libraries?

The people of SG know they will Still be lying for these libraries. That’s not the point.

What they are saying is that it takes EBR the same amount of money to run 14 libraries as it would to run the whole city of SG

My thoughts exactly. This seems like a poor place for them to be starting.

Also, I took my son to the new main library pretty recently and it is awesome. The parish may spend a lot on libraries (although, I haven't seen comparisons to other cities); but the system has a lot to show for it.

Aren't they currently renovating the one on Jones Creek?

Actually the Library system is independent, has its own funding source and its own board.

BTW, the library tax is a property tax of 11.1 mils. Sounds like they are saying they will need a significantly higher millage rate than that of the libraries to fund their city government. The Parish has about 450,000 residents and the proposed city has what about 90,000 residents? So, property taxes will go up about 50 mils?

WRONG
You obviously didn't read the proposed SG budget.
There is s 2% sales tax currently being paid now that would fund the city govt.
Quit making up chit.

IMO Baton Rouge can definitely send less on libraries.

They have an excellent setup, but that fancy one downtown really wasn't necessary.

Can we get link to the budget?

The only one I could find was the old proposal that saw revenues of $52 million and included taxes from gaming (L'auberge).

The Parish does... including branches in Central, Zachary, Baker, and at least one in what would be St. George. Two of them were within St. George the first time but the Bluebonnet branch is now left in limbo.

I hope St. George succeeds but their budget will double within the first ten years just from realizing that they'll eventually be forced to build up their own municipal police department.

Whether it's Sid Gautreaux or his successor, eventually a sheriff election will revolve around the rest of the parish's sour grapes for subsidizing police protection in a city the size of Baton Rouge that doesn't want to pay for its own police. Baker, Zachary, and Baton Rouge all pay for their own police departments and Central has had to steadily grow their own over the last ten years. Nobody is going to just give a city of 86,000+ (and probably the richest per capita in the parish) a pass on having subsidized police coverage.
