Why in the hell do we need so many libraries in 2018? I think we should keep Goodwood and 2 or 3 others and shut down the rest.

Perhaps they were trying to illustrate that over 460 people work in the Library System sync that SG won't have to hire near that many employees, but it really doesn't fit.

How many employees are they planning on for a city of 90,000?

I didn't realize BR had 14 libraries

The Parish does... including branches in Central, Zachary, Baker, and at least one in what would be St. George. Two of them were within St. George the first time but the Bluebonnet branch is now left in limbo.
people really arent taking this statement for what it is. It was just a comparison of how much money the parish spends on library vs what they think they will spend on the new city. Thats it. Not that the new city wont continue to pay for the libraries. Man some of you fools, not you Boo, are fricking retarded.

Actually that's not too far fetched.
BR the city isn't growing but the rest of the parish is.

At the current rate it would happen in a decade or sooner.
2016
BR 237,715 down from 2010
Rest of EBR 219,323 up from 2010

And then, the truly best part is when St George can actually get a public school going and it becomes the first almost all white public school in decades.

Aren't there laws to prevent that from happening? And why not St George? It's not like BR is getting any better or going to get any better.

Did you read their budget.
It indicates how much they intend to spend, etc? They didn't show s number of employees.

Do you think they'll have over 460?

What do you know about what a library system should cost? Do you have some comparables?

Libraries are more than books. They are a community center. For many people of lower income they are the only source of internet access, which is a necessity of modern life in America.

That's another debate that needs to happen.

The Library System is independent, it is funded by a 11.1 mill property tax. It's going to continue taking that tax money. They aren't going to voluntarily say they don't need it.

That is a dedicated tax that is being collected parish-wide, so the money can’t be used for anything else.

And all the lottery money is earmarked for education.

This is proving my point. Now that we have libraries as community centers every "community" will need one and we will have an enormous library system. It has reinvented itself.

Not to mention EBR has a pretty large network of actual community centers.

Surely they can't have half of the foot traffic that they used to.

Exactly

Govt. will never cut itself.
Look at BREC. They are similar to the Library System in that they are run by a board and they have their own revenue stream.

They will continue collecting those taxes and inventing ways to spend them. There will never be a day when they say we have enough parks. They will always want more.

By community centers you mean slush funds for NBR metro council members?

It's a fact that paying $333,000 per month, per library is highway robbery

While whoever wrote that post isn’t flat out lying, it’s certainly misleading to people who don’t know better.

I would assume that 56 million figure includes salaries and pensions, which like all levels of government takes up a large chunk of the budget.

It’s easy for STG to claim a 58 million budget without factoring in things like salaries, and not having to worry about pensions or hiring a lot of employees.

Again, I’m on the St. George train, but there’s no need to push misleading info to get your point across.

I'm still trying to figure out how the city will get any money without raising or implementing any taxes.

Aren't the current taxes parish-wide?
