What a bunch of horse shite! We had a car seat manufactured June 2012. It had a 7 year expiration date. It’s in mint condition and we were going to give it to a nephew for their kid. My wife thinks it would not be safe because the manufacture suggests it may be compromised after 7 years. If you haven’t bought a baby’s car seat recently. They are not cheap.

every year, target does a trade in expired car seat for 'x' % off coupon. My sister's friend gave her an expired car seat to do that, if that helps any

I could see an argument for the plastic weakening in the sun, I guess.

Which, why are they even plastic anyway? Didn’t you people hear Greta? How dare you!

I'm assuming it's the plastic weakening in the sun. I believe bulletproof windows need to be replaced every 5 years or so too.

I would imagine it's an estimate on when the plastic in it will become brittle, making it unsafe in a crash.

The car seat isn’t “expired” it’s just beyond the useful life the mfg has determined.

It’s a CYA for the mfg because they were getting sued for kid’s injuries in 20 year old car seats with defective equipment.

This is the reason. Interesting somewhat related fact...bulletproof vests have expiration dates as well

I thought they only have to be replaced after being subjected to forces of an event.

Exactly. Doesn’t seem like something to be upset about, you are still free to use it after it’s expired

If it’s your own car seat and you know 1) it wasn’t used often and 2) not sitting in a car then you can continue to use it and not worry about it. The expiration is due to the wear of the plastic after constant clicking in and out and the plastic breaking down from the sun

You are a week too late, in September Wal-Mart was exchanging $30 gift cards for expired car seats.

I imagine that’s an engineered seat that is designed to strap in a baby person for high impacts in vehicles.

Something would give eventually.
