I thought they only have to be replaced after being subjected to forces of an event.
The national highway safety commission has 5 criteria, i believe, that they say requires a car seat to be replaced. If any of those things happen during a crash, then the seat needs to be replaced. Some car seats say it's ok to follow the safety commission's recommendations, but Graco says any car seat in a vehicle involved in a crash must be replaced. It doesn't matter if the accident was minor or if the seat was occupied or anything else. Insurance will cover costs, but you have to take pictures and fill out the paperwork.
Seems wasteful, but I'm not willing to gamble on my kids safety to save a buck.
