Another oddity.

Wife got in a minor fender bender.

Insurance deemed the car seat no longer "safe".

They paid for a new one, but it felt weird destroying (had to submit proof of the belts being cut) a perfectly good car seat.

I do love poor people not having kids. I’d rather them not get pregnant though.... but uh... no kid for the poor is better than kid for the poor.

Let the downvotes commence!

I imagine that’s an engineered seat that is designed to strap in a baby person for high impacts in vehicles. Something would give eventually.

Why don't the engineered auto seats and seat belts expire

So basically you are saying your family's baby isn't worth having a car seat that is still structurally capable of protecting the baby? Your old car seat, that has weakened plastic, is just fine?

quote:

It’s in mint condition

It's 7 years old. And made of plastic. Just cause it appears on the outside to be in good condition doesn't mean it's still structurally safe.

quote:

If you haven’t bought a baby’s car seat recently. They are not cheap.

You are saying $50-75 is expensive? Because you can get carseats for as low as that if you are on a tight budget.

Which, why are they even plastic anyway?

Please tell me what other material they should be made from...that is going to be lightweight enough to easily take out and carry or place into a designated stroller frame (since most people like the carseats that offer this capability so they can let baby sleep)?

I think that the molds for the seats sit in high heat inside of those cars when they don’t run and something something something Thermal Expansions. Idk.

Why car seats expire...

quote:

car seat expiration dates exist for two reasons: "First, the materials—plastic and webbing—are exposed to tremendous stress in the car: very hot and very cold," Dr. Hoffman notes. "Over time, they can degrade with micro cracks and things along those lines. The plastic expands and contracts with the temperature variations. Further, the exposure to kids: drool and other fluids, juice, Goldfish crackers can cause the webbing to degrade over time."

quote:

Aside from that everyday wear and tear inflicted on a car seat, "technology is constantly improving," Dr. Hoffman explains. "Car safety seats evolve," he says. "For example, we have much higher weight and length limits for harnesses both rear and forward-facing [now versus in the past]. In addition, the guidelines and federal regulations change."

I'm assuming it's the plastic weakening in the sun. I believe bulletproof windows need to be replaced every 5 years or so too.

In the glazing industry. Never heard of this to be honest. I could be wrong.

Maybe add some ballistic film to increase longevity.

It has more to due with the normal aging/structural weakening of the plastic pieces than anything else
