Back in the 80's I bought a 5.0 Mustang from Hertz in Pittsburgh out at the airport. I was able to test drive at least 8 cars. I spent the whole day there test driving and inspecting all the 5.0's. There were noticeable differences between the different cars.
Once I made the decision, it was one of the best deals I ever did. I never had an issue with the car and it performed flawlessly.
Somebody previously mentioned that the rental places only sell the better cars outright. I believe this is true, I remember hearing that back when I was shopping.

They are well taken care of by the companies.
Disagree with that. Ive rented many a car from legit companies with very low tire pressure and bald tires. A couple with check engine lights on

I don't understand the logic of driving a rental any different than your own car. Same as renting a condo. If you are tearing something up simply because it's not yours, you are an a-hole.
I agree. Never drove a rental any different than my normal car and I’m guessing most people are the same. I bought a rental car 10 years ago and just traded it in. Car never gave me any trouble.

I bought a 2012 dodge caravan in 2014. I've only done routine maintenance and driven the hell out of it. Still got it. Best used car I ever had.

I’ve had one and it was fine. Most rentals are just used to get from point A to point B.

I expect that each car is a unique experience. I bought son a used 10 years ago from BTR Enterprise. We picked the plainest car in their fleet at the time, a small Kia sedan. It was street parked in NOLA 2 years now 8 years street parked in San Francisco. Nobody smashes the window of an old Kia.
Back then Enterprise was known for holding cars the shortest time before sale and trying to maximize the sales income... probably different now.
Best used car I ever bought was a Honda Accord off the used lot at a Cadilac dealership. It had been the single-owner car of the dealership finance manager and beautifully maintained. It was practically a dealer managed private sale... once in a lifetime.

We bought a Toyota highlander with 100k miles on it that was a rental years ago. (OT poor I know) we finally traded it in after we hit 220k miles. It worked out great for us and the only part we had to replace was the radiator.

We were looking for a Toyota Avalon, and I noticed many Texas dealers had one year old used models for sale. They were all former rentals that had been auctioned in Dallas to dealers. We bought one and drove it for 12 years with no problems.
There are many former rentals out there on used car lots. My neighbor drove for Enterprise with a group of retirees, and they regularly delivered former rentals to dealers all over LA, Texas, and Arkansas.

People do not run them down nearly as bad as you think. When I was in the rental industry, I only ever saw extreme wear on your typical Challengers/Chargers/Camaros with their breaks and tires. We usually pulled those before 33k miles. COVID forced companies to keep them in the the fleets longer because no one was buying them.
FWIW, Enterprise Car Sales will take the first choice in their remarketing cars (vehicles being bought back by the company from the rental branches) and will do the most to make sure they're the best they can sell. Next go to dealerships. Last goes to auction. You can look up the CarFax for free with them and they'll show the accident history.
Before I left I bought a fullsize sedan that I've since put 90k miles on a after the 2016 flood. So 8 years almost and no major issues other than standard wear and tear. Their warranties they offer are also the same as what you'll get with a dealership certified pre-owned. I do like how you can get them to deliver a car that's in another state and bring it to their store while adding the price to your note.
It's also worth mentioning that at least with Enterprise, they do not operate like a standard commission. The sales rep will make the same whether they sell a Corolla or a Tahoe. Their incentive is to find what you want and that's it.

We got a year old dealer loaner with 5k miles. Registered it as a new vehicle and they added a four year CPO warranty on top of the regular warranty.

I had one and it was great.

I bought my '99 Silverado 4x4 regular cab short wheel base from Enterprise in March of 2000. I still have it and plan to for a while still. I'd do it again.

Have you ever driven normal in a rental car?

When I drive a rental car, I don't know what's going on with it.
There’s something to be said for this. I don’t intentionally abuse a rental, but I have had times when I pushed one hard because I wasn’t used to a smaller engine and thought I could accelerate as easily as I do in my own vehicle.

Done it twice. Minivan and SUV. Both less than 10k miles.
So far so good .

Bought a Toyota Yaris from Hertz for my daughter for $10000 with 30000 miles on it. She drove it with no issues for 5 years to 90000 miles when it was totaled in a wreck. At fault insurer paid her $13000 for it. So yes it worked out well.

quote:I use SIXT anywhere I can in the US and in Europe too and this has not been my experience.
I rented aome nicer stuff from SIXT and they were just as rough as the average National/Hertz rental.
Probably twenty rentals per year with half being SIXT and the other half being Avis here in the US.
The Avis rentals are hit or miss, the misses are like Enterprise shitty level.
The SIXT rentals are always clean, low mileage and the vehicles are problem-free.
