re: End of summer recap How much did you spend on your vacation? Spoiler nothing is cheap

Went to Sapphire, NC early June for a week for a little under 5k
Went to Destin for 3 nights in early August for around 2k.
Crazy thing, one week at WDW cost more than those two combined staying at a moderate level resort and not going crazy of extras.
Just getting started researching next years trip. Its making me feel poor already.

We wanted to do Grinnel Glacier, but you need to lodge at Many Glacier Hotel to get access to the trailhead, or be prepared to get out there at 4am.
I was looking at staying a night or two here just for the experience. Just cant decide if I should do so towards the end of my trip or at the start. Leaning towards end, if I can get a room as we are behind on that side of things.
Glacier National Park - Need Help Planning

We are a family of 4, children will be 13 and 9. Based on out schedule for next summer we picked July 7 - 17, 2027 to go. (Budget 10-13k all in) We will fly out of MSY and don't mind having to drive a few hours to glacier from the airport if it saves us some money on flights and car rental.
So when should I start booking stuff? If we want to rent a VRBO, what areas should we look at? Where to avoid? When's the best time to book flights for this? Any weird things that I would need to book months in advance due to limited availability?
Our focus / plans for the trip is to get in as much hiking as possible. We would like to go horseback riding one day, maybe white water rafting, check out a rodeo if ones taking place in town while there and lastly spending a day just walking around town. We will likely cook most of meals but would like to eat out 2-3 nights.
I'm not really sure on where to start with this one, so I would appreciate any guidance anyone has.

Ran the Q50 Bleau Moon 10 miler last night. At race start time 7:45PM the heat index was still over a 100. Pace was slow but I beat my previous 3 times. So I’m happy with that part.

First run since last Saturday 50miler and legs felt good. Trying to decide if I want to find a race to run this fall or just maintain till La marathon and R2R Grand Canyon 2027.
Gulf coast half or 10 miler in October is a good one. It falls on a long run day where I am supposed to run at least 13 miles at MRP. I have not heard if Goldenfliers is officially done or not. Since it did not happen in 2025 after returning in 2024, I'm guessing probably not.
I ran once last week since the race. Back to just maintaining till the Q50 10 miler on August 15.
Saw the same guy and also stopped. They already had two guys there so me and another guy moved on and I saw the race director hauling arse with the medical guy to him. I had on the varsity sports singlet on.
Talked to several of the Army guys during the day and I think they all dropped to the 50k. I asked them if the decision to run 50 miles was made while drinking a few beers. He acknowledged thats an accurate assumption lol.
I want to do it again, because the finish time was garbage. For now, I need to get my feet to heal for my 10 miler in August and then somehow convince my wife things would go better next time.

50 miler yesterday in 14:10.
Started out run walking 15min pace for the first 30 or so and then just started trying to stay under 20min miles after that.
It was extremely hot and someone said 110 degree heat index. I saw numerous runners go down with cramps. Not as sore as thought I would be so really questioning how hard I pushed and if left to much in the tank lol. May have to try it again to see if I can “race” it now that I got my finish I wanted.
I did the 50k... or 32.8 miles per my watch. It went down hill fast for me. I planned on running at 9 min/mile pace for the first half and then attempt to stay under 10 till mile 20 and then whatever after that.
Started with cramps around mile 7-8 and by mile 13-15 I couldnt run even short amounts of distance without something cramping. It was a long and hot 9 hours total time for me. I have huge blisters on my feet and soreness did not settle in until late Sunday.
I'm happy I did it, but know I could have had a much better run with the cramps. I had some stomach issues midweek and I guess I never really got rehydrated. I am wondering if I should have tried the IV thing the day before. I rarely cramp or get blisters.
The 1/2 mile out and back portion got HOT towards the middle of the day.
Congrats on your finish!
Two of my favorites parts from the race:
1. Saw a guy running in sandals
2. Guy finished the 50 miler and I told him congrats. Somewhere in the conversation he casually mentions his longest run ever prior to his ~12 hour 50 miler was 10 miles.

In a taper of sorts for my first 50k next weekend at Tickfaw State Park. I hope to go sub 6, but I am not certain thats going to happen.
Just picked up a new pair Asics Gel-Cumulus. Been using them shortly after my knee surgery and have not had any issues with the knee or shoes.
Races:
Diablito 50k - July 25
Q50 Bleau Moon 10 miler - August 15
Northshore Half Marathon - Oct 11
Turkey Trot BR - Nov 26
Wilderness 10 Miler - TBD
Louisiana Marathon - Jan 17
Zydeco Half - March 7
Thats all I got planned for now. Hopefully getting more miles than I would normally do this summer will pay off for the fall / winter races.

I made it 8.7 miles and blew up. I saw a pond and just fell in it and laid there for several minutes. Got back up and cut through some woods to get back to the car. Absolutely failed myself with nutrition. Underestimated mother nature and humidity, lesson learned.
Made a similar mistake as well. Ran 8 miles Thursday afternoon, 4 miles Friday morning and then spent most of the day doing yard work. Ended up with a headache from being dehydrated. Planned on 18 miles Saturday morning and after 4 miles the headache returned and I stopped sweating. Shut it down and had to walk ~2.5 miles back to my truck. Felt like crap all day Saturday.
I am getting a little worried how I am going to pull off a 50k in 4 weeks. Going to try to get 20-22 miles in this weekend.
Just a heads up for anyone in the Baton Rouge area planning on running the Hump Day 2 Miler this afternoon at the BREC park on Perkins. The 1/2 mile race is not for 6:15 PM and the 2 miler will start at 6:30 to try to get the race in before the rain. If you are running it, good luck!
I spent last week in the mountains in North Carolina and the weather was great with lows in the lower 60's and never really got over 80. Down side, it was hilly AF near our cabin so the runs were slow and short. Did hike around 25 miles. First run back in BR on Monday sucked!!!

5/15 - 4 Mi

Debating on getting a short run this afternoon. Running a 50k in July is starting to feel a like a dumb idea.

Yeah well talk about humbled, there was a guy who lapped me and I saw him running what looked like a 5k pace and so I just assumed he was running the 50k. When i crossed the 50k finish a few mins maybe 15-20mins later I see him coming in!!! He was the 50mi first place finish. Dude was rolling and that was supposed to be his build up for an upcoming 100mi.
Thanks for reminding me how slow I was lol
As for blowing up I tried to run my marathon pace 10.5 or so and just couldn’t get my heart rate down. Good luck hopefully I’m out there for the 50m
Some of those ultra runners times are crazy fast. Summer heat slows me down a good bit. I also run before sunrise most mornings so I will have to change that to have a chance. Working on building some base miles now. Using this race to motivate myself to run between 30-40 mpw until the race. I need to also sign up for the Bleau Moon 10 miler. I have had two bad races there the last 2 years so I need to have a solid summer of training before starting to get ready for Louisiana Marathon. Are you signed up for the 50 miler yet? Good luck with it, I have zero idea how one would train for something like that! Looks like the 50k and 50m each have 9 people currently registered.

Yeah that’s pretty much it. Most of it is partial shade but there is a spot by the river that’s full sun for a short distance and then the main road up towards the gate section is full sun mid day as well.
Heat/humidity is the worse part of the race but hey it’s south La.
Forgot to get back around to this, I'm registered for the 50k,,, I saw last years 50k winner ran it in 6:22:00. I know it's not during winter or a marathon, but I feel like sub 6:00:00 is doable. Will likely get humbled on race day lol.
5/1 - 3.2 Mi 8:35 pace
5/2 - 11 Mi 8:26 pace
5/4 - 5 Mi 8:35 pace
It has been perfect weather the last few days for running. I am not looking forward to 80 before sunrise and 95%+ RH.

I may miss 1 or 2 Sundays a year and recently I started going to as many Wednesday morning masses as I can. Today, it did not work out.

Tickfaw state park. 50k and 50mi it’s a loop course ~6 mile loop. Plenty flat but plenty hot.
What does the route for this one look like? River trail then get on the road to hit the trails around the nature center and back to the river trail for 5-6 miles per loop? I tent camp there often during the fall - spring season and done most of the trails with exception to the entire river trail. But based on what I have seen it will be really flat. If you have to get on the road, that section would get warm during the later parts of the day in July. I am interested lol!
Ive been slacking over the last 8 weeks with just a few runs here and there. Spring is a busy time!! Going to make more of a effort to post here more often to hold myself accountable!
4/20 - 4 Miles easy at 8:40 pace
4/21 - 7 Miles with mile repeats

Get the AllTrails app.
Used it when we went to the Smokeys a few years ago and often for the trails in the state parks here when we go camping. The trails are easy around here but was still nice to have.
Finally got around to booking and planning the main stuff so far. AllTrails FTW with finding trails!
Day 1: Rainbow, Turtleback and Drift Falls + Stairway Falls
Upper Bearwallow Falls Trail
Gorges State Prk Visitor Center - Looks like a nice one.
Day 2: Dupont State Recreational Forest
Hooker, Triple, Grassy Creek and High Falls (Hunger games movie has a scene from on of these falls)
Big Rock, Ceder Rock, Little River and Corn Mill Shoals Trail
Day 3: Renting a boat in Lake Jocassee.
Day 4: Pisgah National Forest
John Rock Trail Loop
Moore Cove Falls Trail
Sliding Rock
Day 5 TBD
Day 6:
Whiteside Mt Trail
Chimneytop Trail
Silver Run Falls
Whitewater Falls to whitewater River Trail
Got some stuff to figure out but the plan is to be back to the cabin around 5 in the evening to hang out or go out for dinner.

As mentioned, there are hundreds of falls in the area.
They have way more of them than I was expecting.
