Everytime I have a rental I test how fast it can get to 60. I fricking gun it snd have no concern for the vehicle.

Yes, if you’re buying a higher end vehicle, not your run of the mill Carola.
They are well taken care of by the companies. Likely better than the average person when it comes to scheduled maintenance.
The real key if you’re going the rental route is to see if you can find a CPO.

Not sure I agree...
I rented aome nicer stuff from SIXT and they were just as rough as the average National/Hertz rental.
Not as trashed as Enterprise junk, but still kinda skint up.

I don't understand the logic of driving a rental any different than your own car. Same as renting a condo. If you are tearing something up simply because it's not yours, you are an a-hole.
I don’t disagree. And I’ve never driven one wildly or like an a-hole. But lots of people do.

Most rental cars haven't been driving hard, especially if mostly used by folks on business or family vacation travel. We've done fine buying used rentals, but we stick to Honda/Toyota.

Depends on the type car. No one is dogging a Prius.

Probably also doesn't return the shopping cart to the corral, doesn't replace the toilet paper roll with 1 square left, and takes phone calls at the movies.

Bought one for my wife and now have had it about five years. It’s been a solid car.
Buying new is dumber in my opinion. New car prices are absurd.

The car will most likely be wrecked before it would wear out anyway. Go for it.

I wouldn’t.
People, including me, abuse them. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a rental car I haven’t tested the rev limiter on. They do have good preventive maintenance programs, but they also have a bad habit of getting moderately functioning tards to do the work to keep it cheap. Especially cosmetic repairs. And while they have to report wrecks, there’s a lot of wiggle room there and bumper replacements, etc normally don’t get reported and they just slap on an aftermarket and have some recon baw slap some paint on it and cure it in the parking lot.

We rented an Expedition and wanted to see if we wanted to buy one from experience. We then went to dealership to drive one for 2 days. The 2 expeditions were nearly the same but the rental was “rode hard”. It was no where near condition of the other one. People rent them and drive them like a bat out of hell. I wouldn’t ever buy one unless it was several thousands less than comparable model with miles. People tear rentals up. Not surprised

Have you ever driven normal in a rental car?
I drive normal in a rental car about 100% of the time. What the frick are you people doing in rentals? You realize these need to be returned, correct? Why would you do something that could frick it up?
Being scared to buy a former rental is an irrational fear.

We buy used fleet/rental vehicles at work all the time. Typically look for something 2 years old with 30-40k miles and then we keep them for 4-5 years or until they pass 100k. They’re company cars and no one is traveling a ton for work so the timeframe is usually about 4 years then we trade them in. The only issues we have had with them are self inflicted when someone gets in a wreck and does some damage to something other than light body work.

I think They're amazing. Rentals can do things most cars won't.

Decades ago I was renting a lot on business trips.
The rentals weren't well maintained:
Brake failure in Nova Scotia
Water pump fail in Arizona
Car stuck in third gear in Michigan
Car wouldn't start second time I turned it on in Houston.
I can't give you a per centage of all rentals but that seemed like a lot for a ten year period.
eta: it's not mechanical but in California, discovered that the license plate was expired by three months. Took it back to the renter, they said keep driving it, the police don't care.
