Apparently, there are now more job vacancies than unemployed people - do you believe this?

U.S. job openings unexpectedly rose to a fresh record in April, with vacancies increasingly exceeding the number of unemployed workers amid a robust labor market, Labor Department data showed Tuesday.

The rise in openings in April was broad-based, led by professional and business services, the JOLTS report showed. Other gainers included manufacturing, trade and transportation, and leisure and hospitality.

Unemployment shouldn't exist then. Or welfare.

Workforce participation has dropped dramatically. Some is attributable to retiring boomers. A good bit, though, is because most of the job creation going back for years has been in lower pay service sector categories. The economy had been negative or weak weak for a decade, and that pushed a lot of people out. Real jobs with higher pay may pull some back in, or keep retiring boomers working in a second job.

I'd be surprised if more than 5 people in this thread know how unemployment is calculated

It's the percentage of the labor force that is actively seeking employment but remain unemployed. We are probably near full employment already.

It’s a national trend that’s been heading in that direction for the last 6 years. Economists traditionally view 0% unemployment as a bad thing.
My take is that too many of the jobs out there that are struggling to be filled are too low paying. A second issue is that it appears as though a major inflation cycle is heading our way.
Where I live we have always had more jobs than people to fill them, but in some fields it is getting worse here.

Companies such as mine have openings but aren't even trying to fill them to save money. We have jobs that have been open for 3 months or more. We lost a person in our group 3 weeks ago and they just now got approval to backfill. Just to say there are job openings isn't the whole story. I work for a big pharma company.

I agree that this exists to a certain extent. This was something companies did during the recesssion and still continues. Just because corporate earnings are up, companies aren’t spending crazy money on labor and perks. These are lingering lessons and procedures learned during the recession.

Yes, most dont even want to fill the positions. Even when I couldn’t find work, the requirements for most entry level positions were middle to upper magement positions. You aren’t going to get someone with 8 years of experience for a 35,000 opening.

I saw an article a few months back from a tech job site that one major problem is that most companies just don't want to train anyone anymore. They put in job requirements wanting a lot of very specific experience that filters out a lot of potentially good applicants that could do the job with a moderate amount of on the job training.
