If you're poor and unemployed in America its because you're lazy or mentally ill.

I have little faith in most stats put out by the government

Yes. The number of job vacancies represents the natural rate of unemployment due to frictional and structural unemployment. Simply means we should be producing beyond our potential GDP.

I always love seeing beggars in walking distance of a fast food place with a “now hiring” banner up.
Or even people trying to find a white collar job in their field for months without success. Get a fricking hourly customer service job, they’re always hiring. Continue to job search while you’re getting paid.

I believe the government has never really known how many unemployed people there are, and that's by design.

Yes...anything below 5% unemployment is a worker's market (~5% of the available workforce isn't interested in working)....we're below 4% now.

Job vacancies that don't provide a living wage, in mnay cases.

What exactly do you consider a living wage? Be specific.
Posted on 6/6/18 at 8:38 am to yoga girl
Do you mean an actual living wage or a living wage with a bunch of luxuries you don’t need?

quote:4% unemployment is considered Full Employment for a country.
Unemployment shouldn't exist then. Or welfare.
Less than 4% actually hampers an economy. It means that there aren't enough workers, so businesses can't expand and new businesses can't start.
It is great for workers, as it puts them in an advantageous negotiating position. Low unemployment usually correlates to higher wages as industries compete for labor.

The official calculations of this stuff is pure unadulterated garbage.

If you remember the rudimentary lesson from Economics, increased scarcity means higher value. Higher value means the customer (in this case employers) are willing to pay more.
God bless free market capitalism!

$15 per hour - or more.
There is no excuse for not having a $15 per hour minimum wage.

companies just don't want to train anyone anymore
quote:Yup. I have been applying for jobs that have a requirement of 3-5 years experience now, because the ones that require 0-1 years experience don't pay shite ($40-50k for ME jobs). I'm comfortable, so I just won't settle for that low of a salary when I could've gotten that without any degree at all.
They put in job requirements wanting a lot of very specific experience that filters out a lot of potentially good applicants that could do the job with a moderate amount of on the job training.
Eta: I recently applied for a position with a company who had a requirement of someone having familiarity with their own proprietary diagnostic software. It isn't a big company either. I know the company well, and I know that they don't have anyone internally that fits their requirements.
Companies also DGAF about employee retention. They blame it on people job-hopping, but they started it all by cutting pay raises and benefits. My gf got her MBA, and they gave her a 2% raise as an operations manager with 10 years of experience. That is how you lose qualified people. She'd be dumb not to be looking elsewhere. Hell, we went to the beach and met someone that told her to come interview for a position with a 45% raise from where she is now.

Yes. My employer has had at least 15-20 positions unfilled for a year.
We will basically take anyone who applies for some of them at this point.

1.) Some jobs are not worth $15/hr to an employer.
2.) forcing an employer to pay $15/hr for jobs that do not provide more than $15/hr of value are a net negative for businesses.
3) Businesses not wanting to pass the increased costs to the consumer, usually react to MW increases by decreasing labor through layoffs and/or reduced hours.
I feel sick that I have to explain this still in 2018. We are the most educated generation in US history, yet filled with so many deluded imbeciles.

it really isn't necessary to explain it to an obvious troll

I don't think it is a troll. Just another entitled millenial who grew up being told that Bernie Sanders is a competent mind, and should be listened to.
