It's very easy to work your way from fry cook to manager.

Adults working min wage jobs are either immigrants, or people using part time work to suppliment their welfare.

It's the reason we need the illegals.

This, actually, is probably the best possible argument for illegal aliens.

I would bet most of these jobs are concentrated in about 20 cities. They are certainly not spread evenly around the country.

More important, a lot of them probably require specialized training and in some cases licensing.

There's a shortage of IT jobs. But you have to pay to go back to school and get a piece of paper (unless you're really lucky and an employer let's you apprentice with their IT department). It takes a couple of years of school to get into nursing (and you have to go the school/licensing route).

It's not like you can just be smart and hard working and learn on the job.

Being smart and hard working goes pretty far. Who can't learn IT?

That's your reasoning? Fry cook to manager?

Managers probably make more than you.

It's impossible to stay at a full time job a couple of years and be making min wage.

The industry I’m in there are a shite ton of vacancies but no one wants to work, or no one is qualified. All the old timers with all the experience have retired.

Can you imagine how absolutely pathetic an employee would have to be?

I can't

It is just unimaginable

So what are these poor folks depending on a welfare check suppose to do. If all the illegals are blocked and work is plentiful. The Horror this scenario would induce.

I’m learning this sad truth right now.
Leaving a great job of 5 years because they don’t want to raise my salary after paying for 2 degrees.
Oh well.... the free agent market is better for most of us anyway

What exactly do you consider a living wage? Be specific

I like your way of responding.

But to be fair, the concept of a living wage does exist. But its entirely based on economics of job location.

What is the rent for the lowest to average level apartment. Same goes for car note, essential grocery and bills.

Nobody is arguing that everyone deserves a middle class lifestyle.

I doubt it. You're focusing on minimum wage exclusively. Just because someone gets paid $12/hour doesn't mean they can live off of that. The middle class jobs of yore are gone and aren't coming back. Growth isn't the same as it was. It's just not as easy as you seem to think.

Have you given any thought to training people that are 75% qualified with a little experience, instead of complaining about not being able to find someone that is 100% qualified with 10 years of experience? Sure, it would be great to find a new hire with the same knowledge as a retiree who has been on the job for 30+ years, but that's not gonna happen.

That is the reality for job seekers nowadays, and that's why you see companies saying they can't find good people to fill vacancies. Companies have essentially redefined what entry-level means

I actually read a story last month about a farm labor shortage in California because of the immigration issue.

I always love seeing beggars in walking distance of a fast food place with a “now hiring” banner up.

Most of those people have a mental illness, so you can remove them from being possible employees.

The ones that don’t need a shower and new clothes to even be allowed in the building to apply. And where do they live, sleep and shower each night?

I get there are some “fake” beggars, but the actual homeless ones are often stuck in a terrible cycle.

Yes. The number of able bodied people refusing to look for jobs is astounding. Not included in the unemployment statistics are the people on S.S. Disability who should not be. In my industry we find jobs for these people all of the time. Not great paying jobs but jobs that would get them off the government dole. If you are unemployed you can take a job while you continue to look for work.

Yeah it’s funny how many people without a useful education or skill think they are too good for entry level jobs
