You sure? I don't know too many people in the industry that don't know those two terms.

PSA:

Pretentious = Pretending or affecting the pretense (see the root word, there?) that one enjoys things one does not, or to dislike things one actually enjoys, for the sake of appearance.

Pretentious != Actually enjoying nice and/or "fancy" things more than cheaper or more common things.

People who insist on this are incredibly pretentious and act like you just suggested child rape is morally okay, just because you want to grab one cheap/quick meal at a chain restaurant.
If you want to grab something quick, I'm good with picking up some Chick-fil-a. But, if I'm going to a "sit down" restaurant, I'm not going to a chain, unless I'm invited there by someone.

Most people who I would eat with on a trip know me and know that I'm "into" food, so they typically ask me to pick somewhere.

Precisely. Not EVERY meal has to be at a local or unique place when traveling, but if you're going to go sit down and have a meal, why ever go to a shitty chain like Olive Garden or Applebees, unless you're desperate.

Hell, I've gone to a local brewery that had a food truck for a meal when traveling for work before. Give me that option all day, every day over a chain, and it was probably equal to or cheaper than the price I would have spent at a chain.

was at a convention in New Orleans, in the Quarter, a number of years ago. Colleagues from all over the country were there. After the first day of meetings a number of us were all going out for dinner but the group of guys from Kansas/Oklahoma decided to head out on their own... they went to a fricking TGIFridays.

I have people that I know FROM Louisiana that always go on and on about how they can’t wait to go to New Orleans So they can go to bubba gump shrimp company, “because it’s the BEST place in town.”

They aren’t bad people, they are just simple.

LOL so you'd rather an Outback steak than a great meal that wasn't steak?

WTF is so special about steak?

Everything is relative.

I'll enjoy a fine dining meal but I prefer a local hole in the wall to average price meal.

I'd rather eat Popeyes or Chick Fil A than Applebees, BWW, etc.

I won't turn my nose up at all at Bud's or Lee's, etc. but try to get me to go to Landry's I'm gonna be annoyed.

Landry's chains need to get more hate. They fricking suck. So does Joe's Crabshack. What a nasty place.

What’s worse is when a customer that can choose where we eat.. chooses lubys..

I’m expensing it. I will literally take you anywhere... yet you choose Lubys

When I was a kid, anywhere we went, my stepdad stopped at Piccadilly. Didn’t matter what else was around “because you just can’t beat a meal like this!” It used to make him so fricking mad when I’d point out every time that we were the only people eating there that didn’t get off the nursing home bus that was inevitably parked outside.

maybe so, maybe so. But somehow I think it just makes me a little happier person if I'm not so miserable and critical if I have to eat at a chain restaurant every now and then and actually find it satisfying.

I agree. Also these people are/can be miserable if every meal out is expected to be some kind of unique/high level and memorable experience. Sometimes you just need to get a decent meal that satisfies your hunger so you can go about enjoying the rest of the life, doing non- food related things, lol.

Some people like convicts squirting food out of a plastic bag into microwave safe container and heating it up for them.

If this is the case why do chain restaurants have such large kitchen staffs? Wouldn't they just need a handful of people working the microwaves? Also why does it normally take 20-30 minutes to get your food? Seems like it wouldn't take more than five minutes.

Yea I’ve never come across them
I work in trading/prime brokerage
Then again it’s not really rocket science what we do and those seem like much smarter roles

It shouldn't take more than about 8-10 minutes from when they put the order in for it to reach the table. Any longer than that and it's either a kitchen issue or a server issue.

I suppose it depends on where you are.

I was in Atlanta for my last big trip and we didn’t set foot inside a chain the entire week.

If it is just squeezed out of bag and put into one of a wall of microwaves why would it even take that long? And why would you need a huge kitchen staff and not just a dishwasher and a couple people working the microwaves?
