Most chain restaurants have better food than the local places hence why they're popular nationwide whereas the local places are just dumps that can't expand outside of their local market.

Sounds like a troll but he's right you know. Not every local restaurant is some amazing dining experience. Most do suck. Just look at Kitchen Nightmares, those are all local restaurants with the moldy lettuce, spoiled fish, incompetent kitchens and filthy refrigerators.

The chains offer solid mediocrity. Maybe 10% of locals are better than chain. the others are either disgusting or serve up the same microwaved Sysco crap as the chains.

That is frustrating. I can tell you as someone on the other end, I get hit up all the time. Per company policy, I can't take anything over $25, even meals, from a vendor. If I do, I have to log it and pay taxes. I just don't tell anyone most of the time, but I know some chatty vendors that talk with management, and I do Chick-fil-a with them.

I see both sides.

If I'm worn out and don't feel like exploring, I'll hit up the local chain Chili's.

However, I prefer to find the local restaurant. Hopefully, when you're visiting a client, they're cool enough to offer tips and ideas for good places to eat.

I will admit that I hit up In-N-Out when I'm out west.

They might not love the food at places like BWW,

BWW is a place that we go farrly often. Mainly due to the fact that it is close to our house and if our 3 and 5 year olds decide to be little assholes nobody will notice

They prefer cover bands too. Some people don’t want to experience life. They want to relive it over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Sure, but in most decent sized cities there is at least one or two institutions in the industry that have been there for years and have built a reputation for good food. I wasn't ever really looking for a Michelin rated restaurant, just some local flavor.

Maybe in smaller towns, but not the case in just about any city with 100k+ residents.

Not all are located close to where you are. At the end of a long day, it's really ok to get a bite of food somewhere you might feel embarrassed if your peers would see you there.

I don't necessarily have a per diem, but spending lots on food is frowned upon. My boss told a group of us to only eat like we would at home. Well, the food sucks in a lot of cities (I'm looking at you Houston), so I have to get expensive shite. frick it

You have to be kinda retarded to not find a fantastic inexpensive meal in Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city. A million great taco shops and pho joints under $10.

The food is outstanding with more options and diversity than all of Louisiana combined.

Great Tex Mex, Vietnamese, Italian, Middle East, Indian, Mediterranean, steak, etc.

I’m blown away by someone saying Houston has bad food. It also has every shite chain restaurant you could ever want if you’re into that garbage.

At least those traditional choices are easier to explain on a company expense report than some other place that may have a similar name to a strip club.

Yep. Nothing makes me want to eat at chain restaurants more than an OT thread about the utter importance of eating at some hole in the wall.

Don't project. I never said anything about being embarrassed if seen at a chain restaurant. And when I did travel more for work, there absolutely were long days where I hit up a chain close to my hotel for convenience.

I'm a curious person. When I get to a city I've never visited, I want to experience it like a local. I want to go to the popular local places to eat, I want to sit at a dive bar with the regulars. I don't want the only places I visit when I'm there my worksite, my hotel, and the Chili's/Applebee's/Olive Garden. If that makes me elitist or something, so be it.

Houston has fantastic Tex Mex. I forget the name, but I always go to one close to minute maid.

I mean there are hundreds of great Tex Mex and Mexican places In Houston. You try a new every week and not get to all of them in years.

It’s insanity for someone to say they couldn’t find anywhere to eat that wasn’t expensive.

Even in the inner loop there are tons of good cheap options.

shite, I’d eat at El Rey a small chain before some shitty Applebee’s

If I’m out of town for work, then I’ve usually been in meetings all day, and just want to grab something quick and alone. 9 times out of 10 there is some generic chain I can walk to from the hotel so I go there and then back to my room.

After reading through a lot of these threads, all I can think of is "God, I'm glad I don't have to get on a plane or drive hours and hours away for my fricking job". That would be a miserable life for me.

I'm outside sales and cover EBR, Ascension and a few other local parishes. fricking love it. Listen to LSU sports talk all day long. Eat lunch anywhere - sometimes even at home.

If I go out of town on business I always google local places with good reviews. Sometimes there isn’t much that looks worth trying but most of the time I find at least 1 good local place. Sometimes a chain is the only choices in that case I just pick the best one.

I get back 10-15 years ago when you didn’t have all these things like internet on your phone and yelp and such why people would choose well known chains. But with Internet reviews and menus online and restaurants with fb profiles with pics there’s no reason to not be able to find good local places and it not be a huge unknown risk
