Any of You Baws Go By Your Middle Name?

My name is John Lee Pettimore, which is the same as my dad and his dad before.
Growing up my mom and dad called me by my middle name which is Lee. Everyone at school called me Lee. I never had any problems being known by my middle name in any walk of life.
But I have two cousins (who aren't related and don't know each other) who I knew by their middle names all my life. Their own parents called them by their middle names as did their bros/sisters, along with my parents and everyone else in the family. I never even knew what their first names were.
However, years later I found out that both of them go by their first names in their non-family lives. Both of them are on social media and their coworkers (and even their husbands/wives) call them by their first names.
My male cousin was hanging out with me one night and brought some friends along. His friends were calling him Mike. I said "Who the hell is Mike?" He explained that people outside of his family call him Mike and not his middle name.
WTF is this? Both of them have perfectly normal middle names (they are not silly nicknames). Is this a thing or are my cousins just weird?

Me. I never use my first name except in business or government.

I go by the English version of my middle name. First name is Pierre and middle name is Michel. So, Michael.

My brother goes by his middle name, and has since he was born, because he is the 3rd and my mom refused to call him by his first name.

I went by my middle name my entire non-adult life.
Once I graduated college and got a real job, I decided it was time to start going by my “grown-up” name, I like to call it. It also gets pretty annoying having to constantly correct people and explain that you go by your middle name.

I went by my first name James until kindergarten, then for some reason I decided I wanted people to call me "Tony" which is short for my middle name Anthony, and the rest is history.

I’ve always gone by my middle name. Only time it’s been a problem is with work emails. Our work emails are our lastname.firstname@companayname.com
Sometimes it confuses my clients when I call them and say hey it’s Middle Name by the way did you get my email and they say no but we got one from First Name.
Other than that no other issues

Yeap. I sign everything with my full name for years now. My company email is my first and last name. At work, everyone knows who I am regardless. But if I gotta send something to corporate, I’ve been asked in the past “who is this” if I just sign my middle and last name. So I sign my full name to avoid confusion.
We call my son by his first and middle name as one.
We had a younger guy that worked for a temp service with us last summer. He went by his middle name. I seen him again on the job site last week again working in a different department. Seen that department supervisor and asked about him. He had no clue who I was talking about. He said we hired a guy named Frank. I didn’t know who he was talking about. Come to find out that was his first name and started going by it now.

many men in my family are referred to by their first and middle names as one word. John-David, Seth-Michael, etc.

Hell no. I kinda hated my name when I was a kid but there was no way I was going to deal with the ridicule my middle name would have invited.

I do. My dad and I have the same first name so I’ve always gone by middle name.
