Expansion of Medicaid, expansion of Amtrak.

Sure am glad we didn’t get that guy diddling around as governor 7 years ago, and instead have Mr. Honor Code.

Louisiana is so arse backwards.

I wouldn't associate these two

I look forward to leaving my truck at the Amtrak parking lot by the Greyhound station.

Planning these special trips would be tricky.
The passenger train will be running on the tracks used by the freight trains. Football games are frequently scheduled just a couple of weeks in advance. Working this in with the freight lines will be problematic.

I don't disagree at all. But any train line that doesn't have at least 3 trips a day: one early morning around 7AM, one around 12noon, and one early evening around 6 is damn near worthless. Now, for special events you could maybe do a late night one also.

The reason AMTRAK doesn’t work is because it shares the rails with freight trains who don’t technically have priority de jure, but have it in fact.

You're looking at probably 5 minutes or less per stop. I guess they are banking on this being mostly business commuters ready to hop on and off like a subway but with only 1 train per day you'd have more people trying to get on. Unless they don't think it'll be used much.

The numbers still don’t really add up though.

It takes 75 minutes to just drive straight away from downtown Baton Rouge to the airport. We are already at their low end of range with ZERO stops.

And that’s assuming being able to travel at similar speeds. A quick glance shows the track rating between BR and NO tops off at 80 mph, and there is a part on the spillway they need to drop to 10 mph.

I thought they recently replaced the portion of track that was rated that low.

I wish the entire country would get speed rails.

You can get to Paris from London in like 2 hours and 20 minutes on the Eurostar.

At Laplace, could they possible have the train stop at Jacob's Store? I'd like to pick up some andouille and hoghead cheese before getting on my plane at the airport.

entire country
—The entire country of France is smaller than Texas, so the distances and cost to build across the US would be ridiculous

One round trip daily won’t work for commuters. So this must be typical Amtrak service.

It'll work for increasing the property values of whoever's land is right adjacent to the stops. I assume the downtown stop will be right next to land owned by the for-profit arm of BRAF.

The CNR Bonnet Carre bridge was recently upgraded, or is currently being upgraded (not sure if it’s done).

I think this route would utilize the KCS (now CPKC) track which is the one with the 10 mph bridge.

It’s confusing because I believe both have tried to use Amtrak service as a carrot over the years to get federal funding to rebuild their bridges. Then when Canadian Pacific bought KCS, they also used it as a carrot to avoid antitrust suits.

don't see it going that fast. If it could, it could be a winner.

No it won’t when you consider the time it will then take to get to your ultimate destination.
Makes zero sense…..

15 minutes to get to station - you figure 5-10 minutes waiting - 90 minutes to Baton Rouge - 15 minutes to your end destination.

That’s 2hrs in best case scenario

It’s retarded

'The problem is making the train times fit your schedule. What Americans don't realize about trains is that unless there are routine trains and you need to go city center to city center, then trains don't make any sense.

Let's say you have a flight home from MSY that gets in at 12 but there's two trains a day one at 8am and one at 6pm. Are you waiting 6 hours at the train terminal to go home? Hell now. Flights out? Same thing.

Not to mention if you don't live by the train station, you gotta drive in and park. Again, may as well drive all the way half the time."

With 7 stops? It seems like those alone would eat up almost that amount of time, not counting the actual travel time.

It's really only five stops - if you get on in downtown BR that is not a stop on the route and if you get off at the train station in NOLA, that's also not factoring in to the time.

So drive to the train station in BR, 20-25 minutes, park and get to the terminal, 5-10 minutes, board the train and head to NOLA, 80 minutes, exit the train in NOLA, get ride to destination, 25-30 minutes.

I can't see how this can miss.

Gonna be cool for a month.

Then, those we don’t speak of are gonna take it over and it will be a terrible idea after that.
