I can drive there faster people obviously don't drive that route very much.

I don't believe the 90 minutes from Downtown BR to Downtown NO, but I also don't believe anyone can drive there faster than that time either.

Nice idea.

Reality of people using this a lot especially if they do not feel safe using it, will be maybe 10% capacity minus sporting events, Mardi Gras, or concerts.

I see some people using it to fly out of MSY. Again, if people do not feel safe on it they will not use it.

I really don't get how people focus on this being some super dangerous transportation. The idea will proliferate without a doubt though.

I'm assuming it comes from never taking public transportation of any form. No one is paying $10-20 (at least) to try and rob people on a train.

What are they smoking? Nevermind, don't answer that.

According to Google/Waze, currently with no stops, it would take someone 76 minutes to drive from Downtown Baton Rouge to the Nola Union Terminal right now.

Well lit with cameras and presumably a guard or two on the train. I agree, this idea is being overblown. People in the South don't understand public transport. There is a chance it turns into MARTA, but I doubt it.

It will get a lot of use for Southwest travelers from outside Nola I bet. I would use it for the airport for sure. And there are TONS of things going on in Nola that I hate driving down for because I want to drink If they have a late night return trip for after big events, that'll be a full boat.

Great for LSU fans outside of Baton Rouge too. I don't think it's a bad thing.

There are just way easier places to rob people than paying an entrance fee, being on camera, and being trapped in a metal tube afterwards.

ETA: Not saying it won't ever happen, but it won't be some armed robbery hot spot.

That will likely be what kills any viable plan. Since there is unlikely to be a real terminal on the BR end; the train going to BR will also be the train coming back to NOLA the same day.

Which means the arrival time and departure time are probably an hour or so apart.

This solution is being filled with a commuter train when a light rail probably makes more sense with the MSY stop added. Run multiple trips a day on dedicated rail. Anything less is a half measure.

Why is that unlikely? I'm sure they'll have a big parking area with terminal in South BR at least and a smaller one downtown.

ETA:

What would be really cool is if they had way to have this thing go to a terminal in Downtown BR that then had a streetcar go to LSU, but Broome killed that streetcar that the federal government was going to completely pay for because it didn't help black people enough.

What people is this train meant for?

- anyone who doesn't want to drive themselves between BR and NOLA

- people from EBR/Ascension who fly out of MSY that don't want to drive and park at MSY (since I doubt people are chomping at the bit to fly out of BTR)

- people who don't have a car

- people flying in to visit family in the cities mentioned

- tourists who have interests in visiting the mentioned stops

A lot of people pissed that they think this was supposed to be a plan solely to have another avenue for commuting to work between BR and NOLA when that's probably the least important thing this rail service would offer.

I would love to live in a society where I wasn't bound to my car in order to do all the things I want to outside of my home.

Say the train leaves NOLA at 6am. Perfect.

Best case
NOLA - 6
MSY - 615
Laplace - 635
Gonzales - 7
BR - 730

The return trip will then look something like

BR - 830
Gonzales - 9
Laplace - 925
MSY - 945
NOLA - 10

Unless we think they will have a crew waiting all day to return at a later time.

Seems secial gameday trains both ways would be a huge hit. For LSU or visiting fans. Just a shuttle or something to the stadium

2 trains with a passing loop in the middle.

ETA:

It will expand to this after they work the kinks out. They hint at that in the press release.

With 7 stops? It seems like those alone would eat up almost that amount of time, not counting the actual travel time.

Train stops tend to be very, very short. Less than five minutes for a "major" stop. A minute or two max at a minor stop. I actually missed my stop once at a very small train station in Japan because I made the mistake of waiting to stand up until the train stopped. By time I stood up, grabbed my bag, and walked about halfway to the door, the door was closing and the train was off again. It was then explained to me that for minor stops, you have to be waiting at the door

Now, I have no expectation that a train in Louisiana will run like a train in Japan, but getting on and off a train has more in common with catching a bus than it does boarding an airplane, just for a bit of context.

So now they are saying it will be ready in 2027 and there will be just one round trip per day.

Just last month they said it would be ready in 2025 and there would be two trips a day.
M September

They have been over promising this for several years now.

The BR terminal is planned to be less than a block away from where Allison Rice was murdered and the area where just last week BRPD chased thugs on bikes who were in a running gun battle.

I will be really surprised if Amtrak runs a train and crew 90 minutes one direction then calls it a day and leaves the train and crew until tomorrow.

And if they use two trains it turns into the City of New Orleans line where you can't possibly take the train to New Orleans and back in the same day.
