The BR terminal is planned to be less than a block away from where Allison Rice was murdered and the area where just last week BRPD chased thugs on bikes who were in a running gun battle.
At least there are 2 BR terminals

I will be really surprised if Amtrak runs a train and crew 90 minutes one direction then calls it a day and leaves the train and crew until tomorrow.
Why would they do this? They both go opposite ways earlier in the day, then they both go opposite ways later in the day.
ETA:
Again, future state

Great for LSU fans outside of Baton Rouge too.
Are these people going to be walking from Downtown to campus and back?

I park downtown currently and take a shuttle. I assume these same enterprising folks who run these shuttles would do the same from the terminal. Long lines and completely full for these shuttles almost every home game.
shite, LSU might even get into this game to improve parking and campus traffic. Pay $20 a head for the shuttle.

What people is this train meant for?
It's going to depend on cost and time schedule. I could see the wife and I using it for a long weekend to Nola. Our general MO is to drive to the hotel, valet the car, and literally not touch it again until we leave, using Lyft/Uber to get around the city and not deal with parking. With valet prices these days, three nights will easily run $120-$160. Combine that with not having to worry about some shite catching on fire on the spillway, etc, etc, and it would make for a nice, easy trip.
Just as one example. But if the prices and/or time schedules are stupid, it's obviously DOA. But that doesn't make it inherently bad.

Cost and inevitable demographics do that.

Early in the process, the second stop was described as being "in the medical corridor", so presumably somewhere in the neighborhood of Essen/Bluebonnet.

Makes sense.

Possibly, but that's a separate issue from all of the people trying to pretend there isn't a market for this kind of service, at least in theory. Application will be a whole different issue
Posted on 10/26/23 at 1:00 pm to Joshjrn
Oh I think there would absolutely be a market for a quick, efficient, clean, dedicated light rail.
There is not a market for what this will be.
There is not a market for what this will be.

Right, the plan will be dead before they get to the point of 2 trains because of what they will do in the beginning.
I'm not looking at future plans I am looking at what the initial plan is. Once the public sees it doesn't work that is going to be the end no matter how much future plans change.
Posted on 10/26/23 at 1:02 pm to Indefatigable
It might end up being a poor, black people transportation mechanism, but their tickets cost the same as others and that's still a market. And it would be taken over completely by people like we have on the OT for football/events/etc.

So are you suggesting they will invest in building all of the infrastructure and getting a train running and then they'll just abandon it?

Hell no. They will never run the second train because they are budgeting on the subsidies and not the ridership.
Once Amtrak gets the route it can't be cut. It would get too much backlash. It also cuts out any future competition from someone wanting to get that route and subsidies.

Also, I'll be curious to see how this plays out with both New Orleans and Baton Rouge beginning to take on Phase 1 clinical trials for cancer treatment/research. The relatively smooth ride of a train would be vastly more comfortable for those dealing with nausea, and it would more easily open up daily turn around travel options even for those who don't have cars, or families with one car that is needed to get to work, but would be available for drop off and pick up.
Posted on 10/26/23 at 1:09 pm to fightin tigers
So what are you arguing? They'll have one round trip that doesn't work but they'll never change or improve anything?

Sounds like Amtrack to me.

By car, that route takes 90 min with no traffic.
I don't see it going that fast. If it could, it could be a winner.
The problem is making the train times fit your schedule. What Americans don't realize about trains is that unless there are routine trains and you need to go city center to city center, then trains don't make any sense.
Let's say you have a flight home from MSY that gets in at 12 but there's two trains a day one at 8am and one at 6pm. Are you waiting 6 hours at the train terminal to go home? Hell now. Flights out? Same thing.
Not to mention if you don't live by the train station, you gotta drive in and park. Again, may as well drive all the way half the time.

With 7 stops? It seems like those alone would eat up almost that amount of time, not counting the actual travel time.
I’d take the train if it helps me avoid paying $140 in parking fees at the airport

Seems secial gameday trains both ways would be a huge hit. For LSU or visiting fans. Just a shuttle or something to the stadium
Planning these special trips would be tricky.
The passenger train will be running on the tracks used by the freight trains. Football games are frequently scheduled just a couple of weeks in advance. Working this in with the freight lines will be problematic.
