'm a snob, but my sister isn't. Her and her husband probably make this, are very shrewd with money, and they're trying to move closer to my parents (which is the outskirts of suburbia) to shorten commutes and get their son into more opportunities for socialization. They live in a semi-rural area now and he's a COVID kid, so like many he's probably behind on the playground.
Anyway, all reasonable stuff, they do a lot of work themselves, they don't eat out, etc. etc. No student debt, no CCs, all that stuff. But they can't find a house that isn't gone immediately for under 400k. Most of those they do find are absolute garbage. And this isn't some exceedingly nice area, it's a fringe suburb of Atlanta.

shite my house is paid for just have one car note and a tractor note and my family of 5 needs over 100 k to be comfortable. These little exercises always look at the minimum and think that’s all you need. In the last two years I have had to change two air conditioners $15k pay my portion of a broken arm $3k after insurance, other son torn acl $1500 after insurance oh and we pay $15,000 a year in premiums to blue cross. $6k a year between property tax and home insurance. Oh and that $1000 a month is way low on food these days. Etc it adds up

$2,000 in childcare
That’s absolutely insane.
Yep.
I'm staring down the barrel of around $1800/month for childcare for 2 children in BR. That + mortgage and I'm basically working just to pay those things after taxes are taken out.
In Denver and other large cities, it can be $1500+ per kid.

Not sure that would cover my annual ammo expenditures

I make roughly that as a single 30 yo m with just a car note and soon to be mortgage. I feel broke as hell but I also contribute $3500/month to retirement and brokerage that comes out before I ever see that money.

175k is perfect for a coupl with a couple kids. You can do pretty much whatever you want and live good while saving a ton...

Family of 4 here…
No. You are not far off. There are some day care/nursery options that are cheaper. But not by much if you both work and need 8 hours of care.

I think 128k is roughly around the amount of money where I'd feel a squeeze. Would have to either cut savings or make some lifestyle changes.
In the past when we first got married we lived off of 75k, while I was paying my wife's graduate school in cash, which was fine but we were living in a one bedroom apartment and didn't have a child.

I would agree with that.
The cost of living today is insanely high

Assuming I didn’t live in one of the only school districts where my kids won’t get shot in the face going to public school, I would be looking at $30,000 a year in tuition, or $2,500 a month

When the third comes along, you'll be asking yourself if it's just cheaper for the wife to stay home. Next, the wife will get bored being at home all day, and seek out old HS boyfriends on Facebook.
