COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — An AI generated Ohio State Fair poster is going viral online.

“It looks like the pigs are smiling. I am not sure they actually smile like that, especially when they are running around the track,” said David Waggoer, a fair attendee.

The annual art poster contest started in 2024.

This year’s theme is America's 250th birthday, along with the Ohio State Fair.

After this year’s winner used artificial intelligence in the competition, not everyone is celebrating.

The winner took home a $1000 prize, which has caused lots of frustration and debate.

Fair organizers said the winner did not break the rules of this year’s contest by using AI.

A sign posted underneath the winning poster includes they will reconsider rules and prohibit the use of AI for future contests.

Ben Wayne and Dana Bauman are fairgoers that came to check the poster after seeing it circulate online.

“There's a bunch of beautiful art from a bunch of kids that have made incredible pieces of work. Then there's this that looks flat, bland, and somehow cobbled together in a way that does not feel like it involves human ingenuity,” said Wayne.

Others said they are upset because the large amount of money should not go towards an AI design, especially for a state fair contest.

“If I was an artist, I would be upset because, one, I would want to win and get money, the $1,000. Also, it has kind of taken away from the creativity that people can come up with,” said Waggoer.

Fair organizers said “We are committed to celebrating Ohio artists, with a number of other competitions that don't permit Al, including the fine arts exhibition, creative arts competitions, mural contest, and plein air painting. We greatly appreciate the feedback from fairgoers so that we can ensure our contests can best celebrate Ohio artists next year and for years to come.”

Organizers also said the artist is declining to talk.

Y'all remember like two years ago, AI couldn't even do hands properly, and now you see what it can create?

Because it looked the best out of all the entrants. Now that we know it's AI we can start hating on it for being "stale."

One year our high school art teacher made us enter the duck stamp contest. A lot of kids could really draw well. I can't. I couldn't draw a duck. So I drew a simple swan. Messed up twice and erased my mistakes then shaded in a little with colored pencils. It line horrible. Somehow I won.
Then it got second place in the parish. Then I had to go to Baton Rouge where I got tenth place.
For a drawing a spent less than ten minutes on. I felt like a fraud. I wish I could find it. It's in my office somewhere. I used to have it framed with the ribbons.

Not to me. 2nd place looks better in every way imo. If 2nd is also AI its still better.

If any poster or flier has beige as the predominate color it's more than likely AI. Not sure why it's coded that way. I hate it. Second runner-up is a poster I would gladly hang on a wall.

I'm guessing the artist who used AI is tied to the judging panel, hence not answering questions.

4th place is the best and most unique imo

There is A LOT of human decision making and creativity that goes into photoshop. It’s effectively a smarter pencil to the extreme. Not a new “brain” like AI art is. It’s a different ballgame.

Serious question, if not for the state outline of Ohio in the background, does this win? That’s the only thing that I think is better than the 2nd place poster.

If we’re talking Ohio, especially Dayton/Cbus area

I’d like to call attention to the glaring omission of something fentanyl-related in that illustrative collage.

The Buckeye state takes a backseat to no one when it comes to the good stuff.
