Why is it when an alarm "goes off" , it actually is turning on to alert everyone?

He may be the one saying Turn Up to make it colder. That wasn't clarified in the OP. Wife may need a new husband.

You turn it down to make it colder. And the more you turn it down, the quicker it gets colder. For instance, if it is 72 in your house, and you want it to be 70, then turning the ac down to 60 will get it to 70 quicker than turning it to 70 will. This is common knowledge amongst all women, is it not?

Nobody ever said "Turn the air up I'm freezing".

Whichever makes the wife leave me alone on Sunday is correct. I don't even care if the terminology changes.

You turn up the AC, you turn down the thermostat. You have to leave this terminology open for external factors from central AC systems. If you have a window unit without a thermostat, you may very well need to turn up the AC level. In your car, you would turn up the AC if it's not on auto/thermostat mode. However, if you are going to refer to adjusting the thermostat system, you would then refer to turning it down.

I fully withhold the right to dynamically adjust this stance depending on what I've said in the moment and whether it makes me right or wrong. This is based on my years of experience always being right.

The only up or down on a thermostat refers to the temperature setting. So, if you say "up" for adjusting the temperature lower, then you're a moron.

There's some weird flexes out there and I can never decide which one is weirder. The we keep our house on 65 degrees guy or the rfeuse to check luggage guy.

I say “turn the air down” when I want the set temperature decreased (make it colder), “turn the air up” when I want the set temperature to be increased (make it warmer).

The OP’s question was about turning the AC up or down, not the thermostat set temperature.

That is the crux of this debate.

Up = higher or warmer
Down = lower or cooler

Why is this a debate?

Don't know.

All I know how to say about the thermostat is: "Who fricking changed the thermostat?"

Turn up the AC = make the AC do more ACing aka make the room colder.

One could argue turning the AC up and turning the thermostat down are the same thing.

As someone pointed out, to make a room colder from a wall thermostat you are not turning anything up. There isn't variable fan speeds to crank up. You set the temperature lower (or down).

As I tried to explain in the women think setting the hold point lower increases cooling capacity thread the old way of thinking about residential split AC systems is becoming more and more incorrect. More systems have multi-stage compressors which indeed vary the cooling capacity, the ones we installed last year are 5 stage and can vary cooling capacity from 25% to 100% of the system so for each of our systems between 15k BTU and 60k BTU. So for many systems installed today, you can indeed turn an AC unit up to increase cooling capacity. So it is possible to turn the AC unit "up" by turning the hold/set temp on the thermostat down.
