re: About that herd immunity

One of the biggest problems that everyone seems to be ignoring in all of this is the fact that every administration since Bush the Elder has slashed funding into Virology research. We, as a nation, have not put the time, money, or effort into anti-virals or coronavirus for whatever reason. Some claim it is due to a lack of need. Some say there is no money it. Some say it is political.
The fact is, we, as a country, are now trying to throw money at a problem that took decades to develop. We are decades behind the curve, and no matter how much money we print, we aren't going to make up the ground we lost in a few months.

That's my point, that they aren't using these antibodies to produce the vaccine. The original post I was replying to was a guy fearmongering that this study meant no vaccine would ever be successful. Funny enough, he said this while simultaneously calling it the common cold.

Appreciate all the info. I'm pretty sure you're the only actual expert on this that we have here.

Hint: herd immunity

Remember that we are counting people who aren't sick and have never been sick as "cases", which is unique to this virus.

Europe and the Northeast are done with coronavirus. Texas and Florida will be out of the woods before October.

For example. Immune person comes into contact with someone with covid. And they make out, swap snot, everything

The immune person absolutely would be carrying the virus strain for a period of time before their antibodies “destroys” it, correct?

This means nothing.

Antibody counts aren't how the body develops immunity against a virus, and you wouldn't want to have high levels of antibodies in your body long after being sick. It would throw your body out of whack and would constantly be fighting itself.

Memory B-cells are the lymphocyte which provide long term immunity against an infection and would need a specific assay looking for the cell marker.

So you are point at a chart of exploding number of cases as herd immunity? I don’t think you know what the term means.

But to answer your question: the explanation is most likely a combination of factors, the leading two being that they are contact tracing a lot more, picking up mild cases that otherwise wouldn’t have been reported, and the fact that deaths will nearly lag identified cases by nearly a month.

We aren’t yet out of the woods as far as possibly seeing a surge of deaths from the case surge everyone has been talking about.

I’m still optimistic but indicators in the past 36 hours have started to turn grim. Multiple Texas medical facilities have had to start to activate surge capacity and there is I believe one place in Florida saying they are 100% full in the ICU.
