Toyotas are hard to beat. All machines break, even when maintained. Easier to find service on Toyotas, Dealer network nationwide if you are traveling. Parts system hard to beat-most of the time. Many mechanics don't work on VW and some other brands. Ask your mechanic which ones they would rather work on. Cheers!

Well kinda, they’re def cousins in Toyota Fam but don’t share a platform. Both ultra capable. Preowned GX are an incredible value
It’s a wonderful vehicle.
Two kids, two parents, a medium-sized dog, and everyone’s gear for a long trip in a GX?
That’s kind of a big ask.
But for every day around the home base area, the GX is wonderful.
Their other vehicle is a full-sized Yukon.
I’d rather drive the GX all day.

4-runner all the way. Best vehicle I have ever owned.

Aesthetically I think the Atlas is an ideal SUV/crossover shape. It's everything else that's the problem.
If Toyota would get around to making an adult/professional 4Runner I wouldn't really consider anything else.
And before anyone mentions the GX, it's got an 11 year old interior

quote:This is what confuses me. People still buy Toyotas despite the fact that they are a decade behind in tech and interiors because they are so mechanically reliable. If Toyota could just be 5 years behind in tech and interiors they would dominate the market place.

this is the only problem I have had also. Was it easy to do?
Yes, I’m not a mechanic by any means. I do oil changes but not much else. I bought the actuators on amazon and took about an hour each to install. They have YouTube videos out there.

If you don’t need a third row seat....try the Outback XT. It has a great interior, it’s very safe, it rides like a luxury vehicle, and it’s extremely reliable. It also out accelerates every car in your list and gets better fuel economy. They improved the giant infotainment screen for 2021, and it has way more tech than the 4Runner. It can only tow about 3,000 lbs, but the Atlas and Palisade don’t tow much more than that.
You can get one with every available option for $42k. The loaded Palisade and Altas will reach $50k, although they have a third tow seat and are built more like minivans.
If more OT’rs were honest with themselves, the Outback is probably closer to what they really needed than those giant pickups.
Yes. It was marketed to lesbians 20 years ago. But guess who else sells vehicles to lesbians? Toyota, Chevy, and Ford’s pickup truck businesses.
And even the worst Subaru will outlast the Atlas or Palisade and have more favorable resale value.

VWs are complete shite.
I like the the Palisade and the Telluride, but the Koreans are still behind on quality to Toyota, Mazda, and Honda.
The 4Runner is a completely different beast than just about every other SUV on the market. It's retro, it's archaic, and built like a brick shithouse. Won't be as comfortable, but it will outlast you.

We have an Atlas that’s a mom mobile with 3 kids. My wife loves it. 42k miles and the warranty is like 75k miles so I have a long way to go. I think most warranties are 60k miles now but VW is really trying to rebrand so they have a longer warranty. I got this for the reasons you mentioned. I’m not spending 60k on a car. I needed a 3rd row seat though and you probably don’t. The Atlas will ride much better than the 4Runner. You’re really not comparing the right vehicles. Atlas is more in line with the highlander but a little bigger. It’s very roomy in the back seat. Like a Ford F-150. My only complaint is it’s just not incredibly powerful and it has annoying shutoff when stopped but it at least has a switch to cut it off. I don’t think VW is new long term quality of a Toyota but it’s way better than a Chevy or Dodge.

Not the Atlas. It’s a piece of shite.

My wife has a 4 Runner and I think it’s a really good quality vehicle but her Jeep Grand Cherokee she had before was a way smoother ride and turned a lot sharper. Always issues with it but as for a comfort and performance it was really good.
