4Runner's are the best all-around vehicle. Can haul, tow, carry 6 people fairly comfortably, are reliable, safe, etc.
The only drawbacks are the sometimes dated tech.
Just got the right gen, right now the 2015+ are generally solid.
I have a Limited 2018.

currently have 3 car seats, two forward and one rear facing in 2018 4Runner. Would I like more space? Sure, but that's what roof racks are for.
I don’t think they have car seat anchors on the roof
But to each his own ....

Wife had a 2016 4Runner I believe. Good vehicle for sure but always felt like it was “skinnier” than other full size SUVs. Wife and I are small and it just felt crammed inside.

4runner: my family has had 2, both lasted 15+ years.
Our current one is the 2006, >250k miles. I'm still driving it. We'll retire it soon, but for a SUV that will last and minimal upkeep...that's the way to go.
but like all toyota/lexus; they're kind of "meh" on interior/tech. if you want a SUV that will last and be dependable, I don't think there's better.

Can't go wrong with a 4Runner

No...new body on Pilot. I like the one we have now, but it’s about time to trade it in. In 2016, they made new body which I don’t like and that’s why we aren’t considering a new one.
My only real requirement is leather. Cloth seats are awful with kids.

New or used? If used throw the GX in the mix. It’s basically a slightly better 4Runner. This post was edited on 1/23 at 2:15 pm
Well kinda, they’re def cousins in Toyota Fam but don’t share a platform. Both ultra capable. Preowned GX are an incredible value

That’s bc the 4Runner is a mid sized SUV. Of course it will feel smaller than a full sized, bc it is, by design.

Why would you say a 4Runner is too small for 2 kids? Plenty of room and you actually have 2 seats in the back to seat 6 if you wanted.

First you need to decide if you want/need an SUV or a crossover.
4Runner is an SUV while the others are crossovers. They drive very differently.
this. it sounds like OP doesn't need an SUV.
the palisade and it's cousin the Telluride are the 2 best reviewed crossovers and come with a lengthy warranty.
I test drove an atlas and was impressed with the interior space. I can't speak on the reliability of VW, however.
the 4runner will have dated infotainment and cabin, but can offroad and do other stuff better than the crossovers.

I bought a new Palisade last March. Did a ton of research and was considering the Atlas and Subaru Ascent. Could not be happier with my choice, great car.
We have the captain chairs in the second row and I added leather seats separately instead of upgrading to the package that included them. There is more storage area than the Atlas and Ascent. The third row is plenty big enough for a full size adult and one of the seats has car seat anchors. There is still a good bit of storage room if you have one of third row seats down and one up.
I really don’t have anything to complain about with the Paisade.

Acura MDX. Current models are on heavy markdowns because the new version is hitting the shelves. You can get $12-$15K or more off a Tech or Advanced.

My 2015 4Runner Trail 4x4 will be for sale very soon. Couldn't have asked for a better vehicle for the past 6+ years--just time to move to a full-size truck.

Why don’t you just get a cheaper minivan like a Sienna?

Atlas is a solid vehicle. My only knock would the rough “European” influenced suspension. It is more of a “feel the road” type driver. Hard, minimally cushioned seats (another European styling thing). Somewhat more noisy and bumpier ride than American or Asian styled vehicles. Fine if you’re into a “sporty” feeling ride. If you’re more into comfort, especially on road trips, look elsewhere.

4Runner is entirely unnecessary for your needs. The Highlander would make more sense.
VW Atlas is nice but must be maintained religiously.
Palisade likely will not have great resale value.
My suggestion (biased) would be to look at the Subaru Ascent. It comes standard with AWD and has a decent third row. Reviews suffer because the first model year had transmission issues. Otherwise, your wife’s girlfriend will love it.

So you have a steak(4Runner) and two piles of dog shite, and you’re asking which one should you eat.
