Honest question, what jobs are available for a Philosophy major besides teaching Philosophy.

Colleges and universities are designed to educate you. Employers want educated people. You don’t have to go into teaching if you get a philosophy degree.

Do y’all really want to live in a world where no one studies Shakespeare or Edmund Burke? No art? No poetry?

Nobody is hiring a fricking philosophy major for 70 or 80K out of school unless it is some government money wasting bullshite.

What's with the anger about Philosophy majors?

I got a friend who only has a Bachelor's in history with a MBA. And he has a job teaching history at a community college somewhere. You can't tell me someone with a PHD can't get a job at a single community college anywhere.

And when it comes to earnings for people who only have undergraduate degrees, philosophy majors have the fourth-highest median earnings, $81,200 per year, out-ranking business and chemistry majors, according to the ETS. Bar none, philosophy majors have the highest salary growth trajectory from entry to mid-career.

Fair .

If I had it to do over again, I would have majored in philosophy, English, or history (and actually be serious about it) then business school.

Definitely the biggest mistake you could make .. but before getting that far, did he not know how deep he was already in debt? Nah I'm just gonna keep going and find an amazing job in Lafayette while living in Abbeville... Like wtf

Yeah this is a load of crap

My bachelors is in philosophy

Anyway to obtain a PhD in Philosophy at most universities you have to have reading ability in Greek or Latin and German or French - so when you graduated with the PhD most universities will hire you to teach something no way ULL would’ve not hired him (unless they do not offer anything above an intro to philosophy - but they would probably like a PhD to teach that - looks good for grants)

As for the Husserl thing - well - I doubt he’s had 6 papers published and no offers from anywhere - especially from places that teach German Idealism

Emperors and Pharos liked to keep a few guys like that around, so if those ever come back in style he could probably land a sweet gig.

Not a lot of details but to amass 450k of debt seems nutty unless there's some crazy health related issue.

At any rate, if one is that ashamed to work a regular job, I am not sure that the philosophical background has paid much as dividend as it should in way of personal growth.

I think philosophy is interesting, but it is definitely the realm of overthinking and overanalyzing things.

Sees like a fun undergrad for someone wanting to go to grad school though.
