That’s because the truth is, most office jobs daily tasks can be completed in 3 hours at most. People just BS to stay looking busy so I’m not surprised at this when no one is watching

My employers stock price and earnings per share has never been higher. We just announced regional office closures—spaces that house >1,000 full time employees. Must not be too worried about the mid day fricking and shopping.

I’m 100% WFH and get paid hourly. My employer has remote access to my computer and can see what I’m doing anytime they want. All my calls are recorded.

They get a full day’s work for a full day’s pay from me.

I’ve run errands in my lunch break. I’ve also taken calls on my patio.

But in most cases I’ve found I am more productive remote. But in others you just can’t replace the collaboration you get in person with your team. I’ve also found that working remote can feel more alone, which sucks if you are going through a very challenging time at work.

To be fair. These numbers would probably be similar for people in the office.

I agree with your sentiment. The business end of that is bosses will just get rid of someone and hand that work to someone else. It's no longer about the value a person brings to the org, it's how much that person costs. Simple economics.

Caveat that most of this has nothing to do with trades and is specific to my experience as a white collar worker…

For a lot of office jobs it’s simply a fact that you don’t have eight full hours of work to do every single weekday—not even most weekdays. Obviously, workers who are in the office all day long (probably) aren’t having sex and shopping during their work day, but they are wasting time surfing the Internet in their offices or shooting the shite with coworkers etc.

And it’s not a matter of laziness per se, because a lot of people who do that still get their shite done and do their part in keeping the company or agency running. It’s a matter of society still being organized around a 40-hour workweek even though the workload of many office employees isn’t 40 hours per week. This dovetails with the fact that real wages have grown much more slowly than productivity… compensation is appropriate for the work product, but your job is wasting an additional 10-20 hours of your week because you “have to be there for eight hours” even though you’ve got a four-hour workload.

The same people would be just killing the same time on their phone/in the break room if they were at the office. The real question is if their actual productivity improved or decreased since going home. For many it has probably stayed the same or improved. It has definitely gone down for some too though. Depends on the nature of the job and the individual.

WFH productivity is definitely job and industry dependent; there's no one size fits all.

I'm glad I'm in a position that I can thrive working remotely.

There are less potential sex partners when you work remote

I have shopped, surfed web, watched tv, planned trips, and generally fricked off for years in office jobs and my performance reviews were great. I am an excellent multutasker.

I work from home for a company, been doing so for 8 years now, so before covid. I went into it kicking and screaming because I was used to going to an office to work.

But, I, like many people are paid to do a job, not simply work 40 hours. Some weeks I work way more than 40, and some weeks I work less. As long as my job is taken care of, the hours are insignificant unless of course it's retail or something specific to the hours you are there.

Place I used to work stopped giving out vacation days, and employees there have unlimited vacation for the same reason, do your job and as long as your job gets done, that's all the company cares about.

And if they are not? And there are always tasks that could be done but aren’t essential right away but they start to slip through the cracks. I gave up a hybrid job where most people are working remote to a full office job because I didn’t have the discipline to work from home plus I need the social interaction.
