may not be a bad idea to fill some buckets with water so you can flush toilets if you lose water pressure.

And of course, don't leave them outside or you'll be trying to flush your toilet with a chunk of ice.

I remember a day around 2014 where it was supposed to just be a cold rain and it ended up sleeting a good portion of the day in BR

no, this was a different day outside of the big ice storm that year.

When will we see the schools start to close in the greater BR area?

I will guess by 5:00 this afternoon

Our county 911 did a call a couple of hours ago to warn the citizens of a serious winter storm coming this way.

For perspective, remember the -24 F that hit Knoxville TN in the mid 1980's.
Then there was the winter in the 1890's when upper Mobile Bay froze solid.

:Pine trees are going to bend over when frozen and then the serious pine bark beetle problem will spread even faster.

Meanwhile I am cooking chili and soups and (snicker) freezing them because they reheat really well on my propane cooktop.

How deep is deep enough? I remember going over to Asheville NC and finding an area with no water. Their lines were buried to the required depth, but the required depth was too shallow for that very cold spell.

The coldest it’s ever been in BR where I live was last year during the snow when it was 7 degrees. Our water actually comes in underground and feeds into each part of the house underground as well. I wondered if the ambient heat in my attic would keep it warm enough to not freeze and all was good. Otherwise I would have bought some pipe heating cable.

For the North Mississippi Delta, this feels like the potential to approximate the 1994 ice storm.

Don’t forget to insulate your outside pipes and hose bibbs for the upcoming days. I normally take an old rag and wrap it around the faucet. Then I’ll take a Walmart bag and wrap it tightly around the rag to keep it dry. It’s not glamorous, but it works for me.

Also, fill up a bathtub and your washing machine.

Question about the two models at the start of the thread: which one do you smart weather guys consider more reliable?? The top one has Jackson, MS getting ice and the other has it just missing us.

We could get 8 inches of snow or we could get 18 here in Northern KY, no clue.

Just want to avoid the ice.

All my peeps in Little Rock are saying it’s gonna be mostly sleet (versus ice), which is correct according to forecasts.

Ice vs Sleet is still the biggest question around Little Rock.

NWS is splitting the difference, favoring sleet for LR but it wouldnt take much more warming aloft to lead to ice. The melting layer is pretty deep but if its 33 through there vs 35-36, you get sleet vs ice.

Tough to know until we're playing with higher res models and actual obs.

Id read the Jackson NWS Area Forecast Discussion if I were you vs model watching.

You'll get the nuance and uncertainties a lot better from that vs what model shows what.

Thats good advice for any of yall, your local NWS Area Forecast Discussion is your best friend for context.

I live outside of Cola and it looks like we’ll be on the edge of some light icing but damn….based on the latest some of you in that line from TX to WV are going to get fricked.

WV is going to get more snow than ice. It's basically the whole state of NC that will get fricked with just ice.

Why is it needed with this storm? I've lived in states where it stays below 20 most of the winter, never insulated them and never had a problem. Is this a southern thing?

For all of you who never spend time up Nort, you get to enjoy the deck fridge for the next week.

It was a tradition at my grandparents’ house. Where are the leftovers? “Out in the deck fridge”

Still need to use a cooler to keep critters out of everything though.
