They've doubled our forecast low for Monday night from what it was yesterday morning. It has gone from 4° to 8°.

That's kind of wild when you think about it.

Any thoughts on Austin area forecast?

Well if the GRAF is right, Baton Rouge isn't safe from the freezing rain as precip lingers on Sunday. That moves the freezing line through BR much earlier than other models I've seen

Why is it needed with this storm? I've lived in states where it stays below 20 most of the winter, never insulated them and never had a problem. Is this a southern thing?
Ever think that houses are built differently where it stays below 20 most of the winter as opposed to houses in the Deep South?

For the North Mississippi Delta, this feels like the potential to approximate the 1994 ice storm.
It was March of 1993. I wasn't in MS, but we were without power for a week. Some went a lot longer.

Sure but hose bibbs? I lived in south Carolina when it got around 0 degrees too and never had it happen.

"In February 1994, an ice storm froze the Mississippi Delta. Widespread damage to powerlines, paired with lingering, dangerous cold left about 750,000 people in the dark, some for up to a month"
There was a huge blizzard for a lot of mid Atlantic and parts of the south in March of 1993 that you might be thinking about.

We're gonna be right on the edge. Northwest parts may get some icing but I'd expect things to clear up quickly here unless theres a southern shift in the model.

It really depends on your type plumbing and how well it is insulated. We have an old pier and beam home that we re-plumbed with all Pex, but for about a foot long section of PVC leading to the hydrant/faucet. I didn't replace it with a Pex one, and left the foot long piece, but insulated it well (I thought). Three years ago we had a multi-day cold with highs in the upper twenties, didn't get above freezing for over a week. On Christmas Eve I turned on the water to brush my teeth in the bathroom closest to the outside wall where that hydrant is. I knew right away. It is the north side of the house and the sun had warmed just enough to melt the ice plug, the water pressure dropped and I felt the vibration of the rushing water under my feet.
Fortunately, I have a cutoff right off my back porch, or I would have had to run to the road down our long driveway to cut it off there and the crawlspace would have been a mess. I ran to Lowe's and fought the crowd of others in the plumbing section, grabbed a couple Pex end plugs, came back home, capped it in about 10 minutes, and still made the family dinner on time.
After it warmed up I replaced that hydrant with a Pex hydrant and deleted the section of PVC that failed me.

This is something to watch for those areas to the south of the projected ice threat.
It is typical for cold at the surface to come in faster and colder than models are good at handling. The NAM used to be really good at seeing this.

I live near Ruston and it’s pretty much the same thing over here. I’m prepared fine but I don’t think people really understand how this is gonna work. That weight gets on the lines and trees and it’s not going to melt until Wednesday or Thursday. So the power going out threat will get bigger and bigger each day for almost 5 days. Not to mention the power crews won’t be able to do anything until the roads are passable.

It did $50 million worth of improvements in the Delta.

Can you please post the run? Thank you!
