- two straight volumes in the final season of Vecna sending demogorgons to frick shite up and abduct kids but in episode 8 not a single one is sent to thwart the plans of the main group or military?

Update that doesn't help the idea that the finale was a bit crap:

The creatures were apparently there somewhere. Vecna/MF just didn't think they'd try anything.

Best guesses at answers:

quote:

Like, you spent your core, formative years physically and mentally battling interdimensional demons, the military, the town itself who’d demonized you, etc. But now Vecnas gone and the portal is closed so a year and a half later everyone is just… fine now. No lingering PTSD? Robin, Jonathan, Dustin all go to college, Will finds love in Milwaukee (can’t imagine this will be an impossibly difficult thing to explain to an SO), Max lost her brother violently and spent an extended period trapped in a trance but no lingering issues there?

Oh, I think the mental abuse would reverberate for the rest of their lives. We see that as much in Jonathan, Steve, Robin, and Nancy being back together and wanting to stay in touch. They have shared trauma and are a bit unable to fully break away from what they were. I'd presume that same would be true for the others.

quote:

- so the military just… left? Just shrugged their shoulders and said “oh well we tried” and is now leaving the whole cast alone despite the dozens of soldiers they killed? And all the money sunk into secret labs, everything learned by the US and the Soviets about the existence of wormholes and threats, just walking away with no reprisal or any apparent presence in the town?

It's the military, not the police. I can only assume at a certain point, continued action/punishment was thought to be more trouble than rewarding. Presumably, they could only deal with Hopper by recalling him and them court-martialing him. The others would need to be turned over to the police for charges or kept in federal custody and then charged in federal court; neither is great at keeping things quiet and out of the public eye.

quote:

- how is anyone still living in that town? How has everyone not been relocated and involved in some government program? Dozens of kids were abducted and brutally/invasively assaulted and pumped with mind flayer spores, an entire hospital witnessed demos and their destruction, a lot of the physical buildings were fricked up at the end of season 4 and there are giant tunnels now all under the infrastructure. Why is anyone still choosing to/allowed to live there at this point, let alone act like all is well?
Again, forcing everyone out brings even more attention to the situation which leads to more questions. If people want to stay, it's best to keep the status quo and let things blow over. :dunno: As for people, I presume more are like Mr. Wheeler in the early season - a bit patriotic and so set in their ways to the point of being oblivious.

quote:

- so… what is the rock thing that connected Henry to the abyss/flayer and where did it come from? Clearly originated from a government lab and was stolen but did it fall from space? What is it and how did it get there and why?
I believe it's tied to the stage play. I think it was tied to the Philadelphia Experiment transportation(?) which involved Brenner's father and led to Brenner doing his own experiments. That led to the spy stealing it and Henry finding it and then Henry getting possessed/controlled and subsequently pulled into Brenner's work.

quote:

- so… what is the mind flayer exactly?

It's like the D&D explanation from season 2. Ancient, evil entity that wants to take over things because . . . :dunno:

quote:

Did it know kids were easily manipulated before Henry made contact or did it use Henry’s experience to inform its plans to merge the worlds?
I think the plan progressed from:
El opens gate -> Will kidnapped and eventually captured (perhaps the others who disappeared were also captured and experimented on?) -> Will saved and acting Demogorgon destroyed -> Attempt at subversion through more growing Demodogs/Demogorgons ->Stopped and gate shut -> Russians open gate -> New plan to gain power of El to open permanent gates (and potentially stop El's interference) -> MF loses again but Vecna gains info on how to open lasting gates -> New plan to open large gate (possibly part of a new plan to merge the worlds?)

quote:

- Once Vecna/the flayer died, why would Eleven still have powers?
Her powers don't come from being in proximity to Vecna/MF/Hive Mind like Will. Hers are apparently innate from her mom being dosed with Henry's blood.

quote:

Wouldn’t the kids have been in pain same as Will when Vecna was hurt because they were literally tethered to the hive mind?

Good question - maybe they were protected by being in the unconscious state while intubated with vines :dunno:

quote:

- guess all the pregnant women that were using Kali as a blood donor for got sucked into space when the upside down was destroyed?
Kali said they were dying from her blood. Presumably they were dead by the time the Upside down collapsed; the timeline of when she tried to escape is unclear.

quote:

- where did all the meat and viscera and horns that made up the final flayer come from?
Best guess - that's where all the Upside Down/Abyss creatures went.
quote:

-Will lending a hand in the final battle with Vecna was good

-Glad they didn’t try to redeem Vecna

-Joyce with the axe was OK I guess

I’ll say I want to believe like the OG adventure party.

The not as good parts
-The Mind flayer went down like a bitch; I get they wanted everyone to have a hand in the win, but that’s was just laughably bad; let’s just run to this cliff a quarter mile away and scale either side in the next few seconds. I’m sure the 100 foot monster won’t get a hit on any of us.

-Glad they picked the right direction to randomly travel in the alternate dimension; at least give me a line from Will saying he felt it was that way or something

-Why is Will no longer hurt when plugged in? Because the story needs that to be the case! Ok then.

-Where’d the rock in the case come from? Who was the scientist in the cave? Seems like access to the abyss is available somewhere still.

-The Abyss and Upside Down just ran out of monsters I guess.

-So Dr K just let them all go and everyone just said C’est la vie? That’s interesting.

-Hopper has an M15 and can’t just shoot at the chopper with the speaker hovering right outside the window?

-All those kids and their families just gonna keep quiet?

Some thought/answers:
It's the conclusion of the seemingly abbreviated arc of Will has access to Vecna's power. It's a quickly tied up loose end.

They offered redemption but closed the door on it when Vecna said he was shown a way to fix the world and accepted it. Whether it was actually Henry or he was too weak and was still controlled, is debatable. It was an actual good example of subverting expectations.

I'm glad someone confirmed the kill. I was surprised that Dustin didn't come in a stab or decapitate Vecna. But I'm glad Joyce got to do something and get some of that anger out.

Probably should have taken a moment to show everyone else getting into position. A tad too far into suspending disbelief there.

I want to believe. I'm not sure if I totally do though.

Again, something more than Steve and Dustin getting monster goo on them would have been more believable. Someone should have gotten hit with something.

Agree - there should have been some line - especially with no clear direction to travel

Will is no longer hurt because he's confident since he let go of his only secret. Vecna works in playing on fears - see Hopper - and Will got the acceptance that he wanted/needed. I get it - it was ham-fisted in execution but I get the idea behind it.

The memory is touched on in the play - which was only performed in a few places. That guy with the briefcase is a Russian spy who stole it from where Brenner was working on it. Brenner's father was the captain of the ship in the Philadelphia Experiment and the ship was transported to the Abyss. He returned with changed blood type and injuries.

The spy stole equipment(?) which was supposedly found by Henry and sent him there too. The rock is a retcon (maybe?) or maybe something that was brought back upon the ship/someone on the ship when it returned and was being experimented on.

The Abyss monsters probably because the physical Mind Flayer. It does help explain the lack of monsters since volume 1.

I can only presume that Dr. Kay (General Kay) was quickly reassigned/retired after the spectacular failure of their mission. And the new officer in charge wanted a quiet end to everything and bargained a dropping of any potential charges/punishment in exchange for NEVER speaking of it again.

Yeah - Hopper could have easily walked to the window and started firing. I guess they wanted to amp up the tension and head fake that Kali was being left?

I think it was like the end of season 1. Many of the parents probably didn't know what happened or were told a sanitized version and given some cash to keep it quiet and/or threatened with charges for national security if they talked.
quote:

I just didn’t get the sense they had this ending mapped out from the start of the series. Maybe them wrapping up a D&D game in the basement and closing the door but nothing else.

IIRC, the series was supposed to be an anthology with changing characters and locations loosely connected (and originally called Montauk).

So I think the season 1 finale was what they planned - the core group of boys playing D&D. Netflix saw the response to El and ordered more series with the caveat of the story continuing - and the Duffers got paid - so you get the tacked on scene of Hopper putting Eggos in the woods.

I mean, at best, he's only heard rumors of a girl in the woods at that point. He has no clue that she is out there or that she would know to find the waffles and food he left in a snow covered box. It just seems tacked on to sequel bait - think "Iron Man will return"

And now the series ends with the main group playing D&D and then one by one leaving with a nice nod toward a new generation taking their place.

Seems like a slightly repurposed ending from season 1.

As for the lack of creatures in the Abyss/Dimension X, I think they were used to create the physical representation of the mind flayer that is fought and defeated. That's the only thing that makes sense - we never see the mind flayer in a physical form until season 3 when it uses people to form a physical form. Otherwise, it'd be the smoke particles.
Well the college football portal opens on Jan 2nd and closes on the 16th. And that's the only time for it.

The timing for him wasn't going to be good no matter what.

No way Hop walks though, his arse would have disappeared. Nancy probably would as well. Both straight up murdered soldiers.

Maybe they didn't necessarily know who did what when things went down.

And I don't think the military with an semi-off the books operation wants a lot of questions with a trial/holding/potential expanding circle of problems with targeted executions/disappearances. Like, they can't indefinitely hold the children . . . and they probably can point out a lot of things they don't want told.

I still think they had more important things to handle. They lost the ability to achieve their objective, lost a decent number of personnel, lost their base in the Upside Down.

Linda Hamilton's general seems fairly pragmatic and I think she realized that jig was well up by that point.

No coaches stay to help - they abandoned these kids

They killed the entire outpost full of people and lab experiment prego women. Dr K probably said thanks for erasing any trace of that, lol.

That's probably part of it.

You all STFU and we won't imprison you for the rest of your lives.

The military had other things to worry and deal with and a quick closure makes everything easier.

Granted, they probably are under surveillance for the rest of their lives in addition (which works either way really).
quote:

It would’ve been more believable to have a restored Henry Creel break and renounce the mind flayer and join El to battle it and BARELY win in the process. This was too easy.

But I think that's is kind of the expectation these days. The villain is misunderstood or just unhappy and has to be shown the light and then they're good people too.

Nope. Henry saw what the mind flayer was and said, "Yep, that's awesome," and went all in. Subverting expectations has some stigma but for it to work, it has to have some point and it definitely fits with everything that's been said.
quote:

Probably my only complaint about the finale. Thought the final boss fight could’ve been a little more epic.

Yeah, it seemed to lack the gravity you'd have expected. But I think that was because you'd see something happen and then it cut to something else.

I get there is a lot going on but don't get too cute. It has to feel like something is happening.

All in all, not bad. I can see issues but it has some charm and fits fairly well.

Time for some drinking with the boyfriend once the kids are put to sleep.

Then who knows what happens. Maybe he says something that inflames the situation and spontaneous "correction" occurs. Or perhaps he gets inebriated and falls on his face.

re: Sanctions for Michigan?

I don't believe a coach banging a subordinate employee is a NCAA violation.

Though, I wouldn't put it past the NCAA to attempt to punish it.
It feels like something maybe isn't adding up depending on how long "months" is determined . . .

I've seen a timeline that Michigan found out in mid-November and then did a 2 week investigation and then just now got new information.

The above seems to suggest rumors were circulating by at least this summer and why wouldn't the stalking accusation come out then?

My guess - things were fine this summer despite rumors - hence the united front.

Then Moore did something to piss her off and so she ratted him out to the administration.

*Alternatively, other tips/reports (early Dec rumors) came into the administration and she decided to set herself up for a nice sexual harassment/hostile workplace lawsuit against UM since she thought they were caught.

It's going to be interesting to see the "official" timeline that UM releases on how and when things were known and how much scrutiny/corroboration there is for whatever gets released by Moore and his ex-assistant/side piece.

It seems like anybody above the AD (and maybe even the AD) has a pretty easy out by saying something like: "We were actively investigating this situation.... taking great care to be fair to all parties involved....."

Then I hope they didn't talk about any conclusions, knowledge, incidents, etc, on texts or emails. I expect someone will be filing FOIA requests for those sort of communications looking for a coverup.

It wouldn't be the first time someone said something digitally and got caught.

Which QB would you want?

QB A:
369/543 - 68% - 4169 yards - 24 TDs - 11 INTs - 97.0 Rating - 19 sacks

QB B:
196/331 - 59.2% - 2241 yards - 16 TDs - 4 INTs - 90.7 Rating - 36 sacks

Lane is an opportunist. Had he known this was coming, he would’ve waited.

To use Alabama as leverage. I don't know if Alabama could pay him enough money to deal with the Alabama fans again. But it might get him another 1.5-2 million/year from another school.

I'd assume Kiffin thinks he can fool the LSU fans if things don't go his way fast enough; Alabama fans are so desperate to cling to the Saban years (and their dislike of Lane), that he'd have less slack to get things going his way.

I can't believe Michigan is moving that quickly and that Alabama is moving that quickly in response while preparing for the playoff.

Especially with reports of a Michigan Board of Regents meeting tomorrow to discuss their AD.
