Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson's property management group has pitched a city panel on moving New Orleans' dilapidated City Hall and Civil District Court into a downtown office building Benson owns, an offer city officials appear to be taking seriously.

GMB Vision, a company that represents Benson, suggested that the city lease space at Benson's 1515 Poydras Street through a public-private partnership and build two new buildings adjacent to that 27-story facility. One building would house a City Council chamber, while the other would house the Civil District Courthouse, per the proposal.

Other City Hall employees would move into office space in the main building. The proposed construction of the two buildings, per the $342 million plan, would wrap in 2031, after which City Hall on Perdido Street would be demolished.

The state leases space from her as part of keeping the Saints in Louisiana. They pay premium so how much do you think the city of New Orleans will pay to occupy one of her buildings.

I work right there. Both City Hall and Civil District Court desperately need to be torn down.

This should probably be in the Pelicans Talk section

Gayle wants to buy the City Hall / Duncan Plaza land for her new basketball area. City has been dragging its feet on the relocation, so she bought the building next door and is making it happen herself.

She got an extension from the NBA but she needs to present an Arena plan before 2030 or the league might force a relocation. This timeline would have her constructing a new facility in 2031 for use in the 2033-34 season. This will be her ultimate legacy project.

Lady Gayle is a model of excellence. It is apparent by her teams' performances in the Box Score.

The more parts of the city that Lady Gayle can touch - the better New Orleans will be for generations to come.

She might get Moreno to bite. Moreno and Rita were "tight" back in the day, and I'm sure Gayle knows her from before she got into politics. This sounds like a win win for everyone, so I'm sure the city will find a way to screw it up.

A new arena where City Hall and the park is would be a phenomenal location for traffic, compared to a river area site. I 10 westbound has on-ramp from Poydras and a nearby eastbound ramp near Canal.

New Orleans spending half a billion on a new city hall when there is available office space seems dumb.

City hall should move into one shell square. Save the city on a massive build out and put enough permanent occupancy into a major CBD building facing a doom loop of vacancy in the very near future.

Razing both would add value to both, not to mention being an improvement

What will happen to the current city hall? How will that space be used?

I don't know why she doesn't just donate it at this point. It's not like she needs the money, but them again, NO government doesn't really deserve anything good either. That city hall is a dump.

I love this city with all of my heart and have invested in her, but you’re probably right. I’m ready to move…

I have been to courthouses and City Halls in many major cities around the country and around the world. Just saw the ones in Paris a few days ago.

Many of them look like majestic palaces.

Ours looks like a dump. It is an embarrassment. And every time they spend money to remodel something on the inside it is like putting lipstick on a pig.
