If we drafted him somehow, people would love this.

Kira was starting to play at a high level before the injury…

Agreed. Kira had started to unlock something right before he got hurt.

That doesn’t mean he will pan out, but he had started to figure some things out.

There’s also an almost 1 million dollar difference per year salary wise between 8 and 12. That could be important to a team like NOLA where future salary is going to be very important. If you don’t see a big difference between 8 and 14th guys, and you can also maybe dump salary and pick up future assets, it is certainly in play.

If rookie money makes a difference, it seems like trading for any decent vet contributor or starter would push the cap into that luxury tax penalty, right?

I woud figure they would prefer drafting a young & cheap future starter with this pick. Plus, it could be a while before they pick this low again.

Yes, people trying to switch Graham for a vet shooter like Huerter are thinking about this season only. That's not workable the following year unless Huerter is a missing piece that makes you a contender and gets you comfortable going into the tax.

I personally think they need to develop rookies and try avoiding the tax until they have to pay Herb. It shouldn't slow the timeline down much assuming Herb/Jose/Trey continue to develop, and makes keeping the core together much more sustainable once Zion/BI are in their primes. If you start the tax clock next year, you'll be in the very punitive repeater tax when they are just hitting their championship stride.

Exactly. Unless CJ is taking a big discount on his next deal, this team will be continuing to dance around the tax line for as long as this core is together. Cost controlled talent is going to be key.

Which is why something like

8 + Graham + temple for 12 + future 1 + kenrich Williams + filler

Could be huge

I don't see how we can keep the core together, give Zion his extension, and stay out of the tax.

I think that this is our last season under the tax.

Wtf have you seen from him to make you think this? I don’t think Kira will Amount to anything In the nba. He just doesn’t have it. The faster we can all accept that and move on, the faster we get better.

Sorry I wasn’t aware I was in the presence of such a great evaluator of talent. Proceed, don’t mind me.

CJs 30MM changed the math.
someone has to go before their 2nd contract

it won’t be zion
it won’t be herb
it won’t be Murphy (unless something happens)
it will be either Lewis or Hayes

one of them has to go

I would say Kira is the odd man out of the two for right now.

Both may end up on the way out if Jax can’t get his head out of his arse.

If we don't trade him now, then Jax has to outperform Nance this season or he's gone by the trade deadline.

Both Kira and Hayes have a lot to prove this year. I’d say Hayes is currently more valuable with a need at backup C.

Graham, Kira, and Temple aren’t needed if the #8 pick hits. That’s 20 mil we could use somewhere else. The future player we trade to free up cap space is Val. That’s IF Zion is healthy and putting the league on notice.

So if things actually go as planned that’s about 34 mil to figure out our core and pay the young guys. That’s the dumbed down plan with a lot of ifs.

It’s really not complicated either Zion shows up or he doesn’t. If he shows up we can create space with Val, grab a C, and assume Herb, Trey, Hayes, Nance fill the gaps. If he doesn’t show up we trade Zion and maybe Val too. Hayes also either shows up or he doesn’t. Our future cap relies on Hayes, Zion, and Val as of now.
