So, I have a question (although this may have been covered earlier). With the way the current deal is now, what cap space will the Pels have to sign a FA? I’m not talking about if you include the “what if Ball is traded scenarios”

None. Either they will have the room exception (4.7M) or SOME of the MLE (around 7M).

That is unless they have more moves lined up, in which case they can open up as much as the full MLE (9.2M) and the BAE (3.6M)

Lonzo as the starting 3&D SF

Where the frick did this come from?

Bledsoe
Lonzo
Ingram
Zion
Adams

Who of those 5 are you putting on an offensive 6’7 SF? Bledsoe is 6’1. Ingram isn’t good on defense. Zion isn’t good on defense yet. Adams is a 7 foot center.

Now do you see where it’s coming from?

wonder if they’ll pay the tax this year knowing they won’t have to next year? That would assume there’s zero chance they re sign lonzo regardless of what happens this year, and maybe some understanding of the future plans for Bledsoe and Adams

But free agents can be signed to the veteran minimum with no cap room, otherwise you could be left with a short roster!

I wouldn’t necessarily call Lonzo a SF but I do think he’s going to be the main ball handler while guarding the best wing on D. It’s not a terrible thing because Lonzo is a good defender.

Yeah. They can use the Min. Still counts towards the luxury tax.

I just wonder how Ball is going to respond to a coach that isn’t going to baby him.

Every word here is inaccurate.

Yeah out of people's asses. Who guards the generally more athletic SG if Ball is on the SF? Ingram?

Now do you see where this is coming from?

Adams guards the center. Zion the PF. Ingram the SF. And the 2 guards will guard the guards. You aren't consistently putting Ingram or Zion on a guard, and in this completely asinine Ball to SF talk, that's what it would have to be.

Only scenario where Ball would become a SF is if he is coming off the bench, and you said starting 3&D SF so that obviously goes against that.

It's the process of elimination. With the roster as it stands, and I don't expect the starting lineup to change unless Lonzo is traded, Lonzo is going to need to fill Jrue's shoes on defense. Jrue is the player that we used to guard the best opposing wing, regardless of their size and position. Is Klay Thompson a SG or SF? Because he often had the same responsibility for the Warriors. Give that responsibility whatever position label you want, but it's a big responsibility.

I have been thinking of Zo in the Klay role. Obv not the same shooter by any stretch but maybe can be an equal defender and spot up shooter who has the ability to pass and create. I think that is an apt role for him. If he can be that consistently then I’d more inclined to keep and pay him. But would still need some length around him.

First, Jrue is on another level defensively from Ball. 2nd, who was Ingram guarding when Jrue was on the SF?

Unless the team has a more athletic SF than SG, it doesn't work. In general that's not the case for most teams. For the few teams it would be the case, they made an exception with Jrue. I don't see that with Ball, because again he isn't near Jrue on defense.

Have you watched basketball before? Have you watched Lonzo before, b/c I don’t think you have if you think he can be the main ball handler in a half court offense or if you can think he can guard SF’s.
Hart is the only guy on the team capable of guarding the opposing teams best wing, and that’s only b/c of his effort b/c he’s too small to be guarding the bigger SF’s.

How are we called the pelicans when we only have one decent wing? Wish we went with Saddiq Bey or even Aaron Nesmith.

I completely agree. I don't think that a good solution to losing Jrue is having Ingram guard his natural position though. He's the kind of player that will need to be hidden on defense.

Kira being smaller presents some long term roster building challenges too. Last year I could envision a Jrue/NAW or even Lonzo/NAW backcourt long term that would help cover for Ingram. Now that we have Kira penciled in as the long term PG I'm not sure we'll have a good solution for Ingram's deficiencies on defense until Zion becomes a good 2 way player.
