We've all stated that he is a terrifically talented guitarist however Clapton he is not and he isn't even the Clapton of his day.
You can't make this statement definitively any more than someone can argue that he is.

I think the fact that all of the greats, like Clapton, are saying he's one of the best around says something about his ability. His diversity is way above Claptons. You don't see Clapton venturing outside of blues, ever. Mayer moves around. Listen to/watch where the light is DVD to see just how outstanding he really is. Dudes one of the best, he's just getting lost in a time when guitar based music has lost a lot of ground to electronic music. IMHO, Clapton is way overrated as a player. He's a good player, but Mayer's all out knowledge and command of music theory simply puts Slowhand to shame. And Mayer can't be inducted into the RRHOF yet. Your first album has to have been out for 25 years first.

I would say he plays similar to clapton
Seriously, there probably isn't a kid on this planet who's picked up a guitar and said he wanted to play like John Mayer. Millions of kids picked up guitars wanting to be the next Eric Clapton.

No disrespect, but you have ZERO clue what you're talking about and the above statements may be some of the dumbest shite ive ever read on this board. Congrats.

I would compare John Mayer to any great guitarist, of the Ritchie Blackmore or Jeff Beck level, and then I would begin to laugh.

The problem with almsost any modern day guitarist is that all they can ever be is a good to great copy cat of a predeccesor. Frusciante is maybe the only guy in the last 20 years that has a sound unique to him. Wherever the all time great list ends, Prince will probably be the most recent. Unless there's some 12 year old kid in Boise who's inventing a new "sound."

Well someone obviously hasn't listened to Derek Trucks

Putting him on Mt Rushmore is where I jump off the Mayer train. He's a damn fine guitarist, but I see him as a disciple (which is why I compared him to Cray). As a composer and vocalist, though the whisper stuff bugged me, he's absolutely original and instantly recognizable. And I have Continuum on my ipod and like the hell out of it.

To freely admit that I'm kind of being a troll here. But, YouTube some videos of the guy. His playing is impeccable. He moves genres fluidlessly. Mayer is someone who started off as a pop star, and has moved into so many other things. I don't discount Clapton at all, but to compare the two doesn't really work. It's a different era. Mayer went to burklee and dropped out to be a pop star. Google his burklee clinic and you'll understand his mastery of understanding of his place in the pop music field. I don't think that understanding him as a pop music artist is knowing him as a musician. He understands what it takes to make it as a pop artist and knows how to work it. A song like Layla wouldn't make it today. Today's audience doesn't have that attention span.

Mayer is a great guitar player, but I would rather hear him play somebody else's songs.
